Staff here are quite possibly the most unhelpful people i’ve ever come across, due to the traffic in rochester i arrived with very little time before my train and asked if i could be let through and purchase my ticket on train line or from a ticket inspector on the train (something which every other station allows). Instead, the old woman and man working at the gate switched on their body cams and proceeded to say that i would be issued with a £100 fine. I ended up missing my train which did not have another scheduled for an hour, as i opted to buy a ticket from the desk (which i intended to do anyway). Whilst waiting at the ticket desk i overheard said man and woman loudly slating me for simply asking a question, stating how ridiculous I was among other hurtful things. As a young girl travelling on my own I was made to feel extremely uncomfortable by their unprofessionalism. I don’t usually travel on my own and i’ve been put off from doing so in the future by two individuals who are literally paid to assist transport users. Avoid this station and its frankly...
Read moreA beautiful and ancient town with Cathedral and Norman castle by the River Medway in Kent. Steeped in history, there is a wealth of historic places to visit. The main High Street is filled with independent shops, restaurants and bars. As the author Charles Dickens lived in the area and based some if his novels around the area, there are various events held throughout the year with local society members dressing up in Dickensian costumes etc. The castle gardens also hosts music events by big named artists, has speciality markets and old fashioned fair ground rides. The new rail station has opened now and is just 200 metres from the main High St. Rail links are good. Parking can be a problem when it's very busy but there is a new multi storey car park behind the rail station. All in all its a great place to visit, the nearby historic dockyard in Chatham plus Fort Amherst plus The Royal Engineers museum in Gillingham means there is plenty to do...
Read moreServices from this station are generally reliable and station staff pleasant and helpful. The station buildings are modern if somewhat out of place with its surroundings, but the platform architecture is absolutely awful. It's basically all stainless and galvanised steel, offering very little shelter from the weather. The wind blows across all platforms, and on platform 1 you can't stand under the metal canopy in the rain and stay dry as the rain blows through anyway. There are some bus stop like shelters but if you perch in here on the cold stainless steel 'seats' you can't see the departures boards, or hear the announcements if it's raining. Whoever designs this stuff needs to try to actually use it. Sadly the Victorian railway station that this replaced was far more pleasant, it just needed some care...
