One of the painful parts of moving to a new city is leaving behind the great people you’ve found to help you solve problems in your life. When I moved to Orlando, I needed a new barber which has always been a challenge – my hair is both wavy and curly at various parts of my head! Thankfully, I found Roy after looking for a barber skilled with biracial hair.

The one and only negative to say about the experience at Modern Styles is that his salon is in the rear of San Sebastian Square. I walked into another barbershop in the front thinking I had an appointment before realizing my mistake.

I’ve often found that other hairstylists I’ve been to are inexperienced - or perhaps intimidated by biracial hair - and prefer simple styles. Roy, however, is a craftsman. He is careful to listen, reflects his understanding of what you’re looking for, and cuts meticulously to create your look and learn about your hair. This is not a fifteen-minute basic cut you get between other appointments but it’s worth the wait.

One thing that stood out to me is that Roy will shampoo your hair personally rather than delegate to an assistant. That personal touch indicated to me that Roy is proud of his work and takes ownership of it.

He gave me a great-looking temple fade that my wife said is the best cut I’ve ever had. He also recommended me a mousse that was lighter and better than any other product I’ve ever used; this may not sound like a big deal, but I’m 37 and have professional hairstylists in my family.
