I've been bowling on and off most of my adult life. I'm not a great bowler, probably somewhere between a 170-180 average. I've had a modest number of bowling balls. But without exception, all of them have been drilled at least twice and some three or more times for various reasons. Something always seemed to need adjustment. I even got a ball back once that was drilled for a left-handed bowler (by accident). As I approach Medicare age, I've made the decision to drop from 15 lb to 14 lb bowling balls. I took my first replacement, a spare ball, to Slingin' Wood Pro shop inside Sky Lanes to have it drilled. It was the first time anyone measured my Positive Axis Point (PAP). In a word, my spare ball came out perfect. I've always had issues with the theory that the thumb hole had to be snug. Likely due to operator error, my thumb has a tendency to stick if it's snug. Tim drilled the thumb hole more snug than I've ever been able to use, but whether it was the angle, finish, or what, I'm not having any problems. My previous primary favorite ball, the Onyx Vibe, is no longer available, but when I decided to replace my primary and alternate shot balls as well, Tim and Joe took the time to talk me through the best options for my skill level. As it turns out, the ball we'd picked out for my backup, alternate oil pattern ball, was not immediately available from their supplier. However, they worked their magic and in short order acquired what I wanted. And last, and maybe the most important thing, all three of my new 14 lb bowling balls are comfortable and fit me perfectly. If I were to pick any one of them blindfolded, I would not be able to tell you which I had they are so identical, allowing me the opportunity to use the same throwing motion and release for all three, at least in theory. Now if I can only get that level of consistency in my delivery. Tim and Joe are the best. I highly recommend Slingin' Wood Pro Shop at Sky Lanes Bowling on Patton Avenue, in Asheville. Note: If you look on-line, you may be able to find the bowling ball you are looking for a couple of dollars cheaper. However, if you buy from Slingin' Wood directly, you get a break on the drilling cost so it's a wash. So why not support the local...
Read moreHands down the best pro shop in WNC, if not the entire state and even into upstate GA and SC. Josh, Ricky, Joe, and Tim are all very knowledgeable and friendly people. Their passion for the sport of bowling can easily be seen just by talking with them, but truly shines when they are working on the equipment. They put a considerable amount of time and care into making sure your brand-new ball fits comfortably. And they stand by their work.
Their services do not just stop at drilling the ball for you either. If you want to talk about your arsenal or where a new ball might fit, they will gladly talk to you about it. And you do not have to expect them to sell you the newest ball off the shelf, or the most expensive one. They will make sure the ball you are getting does what you want it to do. They also offer lessons for all ages and skill levels. These guys regularly compete on sport and challenge patters at a high level, so you know the lessons come with years of experience. Trust me, you will not be disappointed talking about bowling with these guys they love it and want to know about your game.
I cannot express enough the passion these guys have for the game and their wanting to pass that passion on to you. I have personally seen them bend over backwards to make sure customers are taken care of. I have seen them go help a customer just after they locked up the shop for the day. I have seen them be late to leagues and tournaments just so they can make sure a customer is taken care of.
If I knew of any downsides or things to be weary of, I would mention them. A review should include both pros and cons. But in all honesty, I cannot think of any cons. I have had the pleasure of seeing many interactions between them and customers and have yet to witness a poor interaction. I would be surprised to see one, but if I do I will stand by my word and add it here.
In all, you will not be disappointed with the services you will receive at Slingin’ Wood. They will make sure you are taken care of and help you improve your game...
