Gus Mayer — Local services in Birmingham

I LOVE Gus Mayer - I’ve shopped here all my life and I still drive in from Atlanta to do so, especially for the shoes! The curation of brands and styles quite literally cannot be beat.

Regarding the vibes- I have always had really positive experiences with the people at Gus. The sales associates I’ve interacted with have been kind, helpful, and down-to-earth — never pushy or judgmental.

Having worked retail myself, I know how easily interactions can be misread, especially in beautiful or curated spaces where people sometimes feel out of place. But I genuinely don’t believe this team treats anyone differently based on how they look or what they’re wearing. From what I’ve seen, they treat everyone with respect and care.

First store I’ve ever walked in that no one greeted me. Shopped there a few times, only one time I was greeted and helped was by an older white women. She also recommended things for me. One time I went in there to see if they had the new season collection of the brand I wanted, and one younger girl said this IS the new collection and she looked at me like I’m crazy. I told her what I was looking for, she said well maybe they don’t have it yet. Nonetheless, their collections is always a few seasons back, probably 60% from the year before and 40% or less from current season. Their shoes selections are very limited, if you are looking for any premium brands unfortunately they never carry them, they have semi premium shoes. My wife and I have bought several pairs of shoes there. The last time we went was the best experience we have had in a shoe/clothing store. I don’t remember her name but she was great. Unfortunately this time was exactly the opposite. This lady Peggy Lee basically looked straight through my wife and I to ask another couple if they needed help. She was rude during the whole transaction. I guess she assumed that we was broke or something. Not sure. But i will tell you that she should not be working in my favorite shoe store. I will be calling Monday to speak to a manager. I will say this is a great store and i would recommend any and everyone to shop here. Just don’t let Peggy help you.
