This used to be my go-to place for computer parts and repairs. As of my visit last year--no more. A cooling fan in my HP laptop went out and I brought the laptop in for the fan to be replaced. I'm a certified PC tech but I was never trained on laptops since their internal design is different from desktop computers.
When I picked up the laptop, there was a guy there I'd never seen before. He was the kind of guy who loved to talk and talk and talk--about himself. In my opinion he jumped over the line between pleasant conversation and inappropriate and unprofessional talk. I politely listened and finally managed to pay my bill and leave the store. When I powered on the laptop, the fan was extremely loud--the loudest cooling fan I'd ever heard in any computer. I thought that was by design because, as I said, I've never repaired laptops. After a few weeks, there would be times I'd power on the laptop and see a warning screen that no cooling fan was detected and using the computer could permanently damage it. I was able to get the fan going by powering the laptop on and off many times over a 20 minute period when finally the fan would start and all was well, The fan would work for a week until the time I'd turn on the computer and would see that warning screen again.
I didn't take the laptop back to PC Parts because a) I didn't want to deal with that guy again and b) I thought it was a short in the electrical system of the laptop since the computer is a few years old. I knew the fan was new so I never considered the fan itself to be the problem. But the day finally came when the fan refused to come on no matter how long I tried.
That's when I took the laptop to a computer repair place in town. That tech told me that the loud fan noise wasn't normal. Laptop cooling fans are quiet and they change speed as required by the temp inside the computer case. That made perfect sense because with all the cooling fans I've installed in desktops, I've never heard one turning unless I was connecting cables into rear ports. found that whoever had installed the fan in my laptop had crushed two pins together within the same connector socket. That's where the high speed and noise of the fan came from, as well as the ongoing electrical shorting out. He replaced the fan and now, almost two months later the fan continues to operate normally--and quietly.
Admittedly this was my first bad experience there, but here is why I decided not to return the laptop for the warranty repair. To me, it's obvious the tech never powered on the laptop to test the fan. Had he done so, he would have heard the fan turning at an abnormally high, constant speed and the loud noise of the motor, instantly recognizing it had been installed incorrectly, He then would have fixed the problem on the spot. As i wrote, I heard that loud fan the first time I switched on the laptop. The tech at the second repair shop did test the laptop as well as providing a warranty--AND he gave me the old fan back, something PC Parts failed to do. Yes, the original PC Parts repair was still under warranty, but a warranty doesn't matter to me if I no longer trust a place to provide quality service.
They lost my business, and for me that's a shame because for years they were the only computer parts and repair shop I trusted. But with that repair--and that guy who would not stop talking about his personal life--sadly, it is no longer the case.parts and repair shop I trusted.    Read moreI cannot express how greatful I am to these guys for taking care of me today. I spent 6 hours on a brand new, $1100 PC build only to plug it in and have no response. 3 days I tinkered and could not figure out the issue, my knowledge and google-fu being very limited. Finally I gave in and called these guys up and they did not disappoint. I am extremely anxious to leave my computer in anyone else's care, but I was desperate, and lo and behold within about 10 minutes they diagnosed the problem right in front of me, fixed a banged-up CPU (fair warning, never let anyone do this unless you're resigned to the very real possibility it could break and you could be out $300+, but I was willing to take that risk upon myself, results may vary no fault of these guys, they are very good), and told me they'd test everything and see if the motherboard was the issue. Turns out it was, they sold me a new one that worked just about as well (big perk being it was there and equipped enough for my needs), and for a very reasonable price they actually had me up and running before the end of the day. All anxiety settled. Extremely patient and professional service, didn't treat me like the idiot I totally am, answered all my questions kindly, I cannot express enough how happy I am to have bitten the bullet and taken my build to these guys. Next time I'll skip the headache, swallow my pride, and come right to them out of...
