After obtaining some coins in a trust, we went into the store to sell a gold coin and were told that the coin was fake. Prior to going in there, we had already had the coins appraised elsewhere. In addition, we had all the paperwork at home but didn't bother bringing it since we had gone back and forth about selling it in the past and didn't think that we needed it. The only reason we had saved this one coin and sold the rest was because we were told that the year on the coin made it "rare". I'm sure walking in, we didn't look like much but the service we received was sub-par. They measured it, said it's fake, brought over another coin trying to prove the weight was off, and again told us yeah it's fake. Mind you, the coin was sealed in thick plastic. They never made mention that the machine could be misreading it due to that. The woman said it was fake and then the man looked at it and said the same and then said, it looks real but it's fake. They probably thought we were there to scam them but it was quite the opposite actually. I'm not sure if it was an honest mistake or if it was an attempt at tricking us into saying "oh the coin is trash so can you just toss it for us" (leaving a coin, being ignorant of the fact that we left something of actual value). We knew better. We then took it to another gold buyer who was actually very kind and informative who was telling us that there's been some issues known to happen with the machines with the thick plastic. They then asked our permission to cut it open to weigh it to make sure it was real. We said fine and NOT to our surprise, it was indeed real. Needless to say, we sold it and appreciated the customer service and expertise of the store we went to. Had to drive further out but it was well worth it. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone because our experience today has made us doubt their integrity. They didn't try to see if there was a mistake, didn't ask to cut open the plastic...nothing. It was just a five second weigh in and they said it's fake, which we knew with 0% doubt, was incorrect. If you are selling coins and are told it is fake, walk out and go somewhere else. If we wouldn't have, we would have left a couple thousand dollars on the table. Know what and who a you are dealing with.
Not to mention, their attitudes were just not very welcoming. I overlooked that since we were there to do business, not to make friends. After they told us it was fake, I repeatedly said are you serious? For real? I honestly couldn't believe what I was hearing. Three different shops told us it was real (plus we had the paperwork from the original sale) and this place told us it was fake...you do the math.
After our experience today, I wouldn't do any business there at all. We don't trust them. "Don't judge a book by its cover" - this is how...
Read moreThese people are so nice to deal with. My 95 year old father recently passed away. He had a fairly large coin collection that had far more sentimental value than monetary value. I had done quite a bit of research myself and spoken to a few other coin dealers prior to calling Jason at The Coin Shop. When I finally separated out what I knew had some value from the immense amount of coins that were only worth face value, I took everything in to The Coin Shop. Jason and his wife spent close to four hours sorting through the collection explaining as he worked how he was separating the silver that was worth the weight value from coins that had value because of their rarity or collectible value. Everything he said backed up what I had already discovered on my own. While we were there for the better part of a day, several customers came in, either to buy or sell items. Most of them were on a first name basis with Jason as well as a few others who were there for the first time. He was courteous, friendly and patient with all them despite the fact that we had come on very short notice with a large collection that he was diligently trying to work through. This interaction with his customers gave me further confidence that Jason was the one we could trust to give us an honest price. Other places we had been to or talked with had more of a "pawn shop" feeling. It was hard to let Dad's coin collection go but it had to be done to settle his estate. I am so glad that we...
Read moreI stopped by the coin shop to sell Silver coins, the guy with curly hair, assuming that’s the owner was very disrespectful with my items he was going through my box of coins, like he was digging through trash at the garage sale. Some of Silver dollars and half dollars that was 90% silver , he laid them out in stacks of three or four gave me an offer of $14 for three and the other stack to give me $18 for three silver dollars. At that moment, I didn’t even try to tell him that he’s not even giving me the silver value of those coins, not mentioning the historical value so I just turned around and left. Obviously he was trying to cheat me since I told him it was my Grandfather and my grandfather passed away, so the dude was thinking. I probably don’t know anything about coins at all since it wasn’t mine. It was my first time coming here and I will never go back. I don’t like people like that. They try to take advantage of you by low balling, straight up lying making you think that you got just regular copper coin. I also would like to mention that the owner of this shop was not very welcoming, I think somebody mentioned that in other review, Yeah, so whoever goes there watch out for low bowling deception in the value of your coin. Don’t make your final decision until you go somewhere else to verify the price...
