Two important notes before I start: The place itself is very well designed and maintained. It is a very neat and comfortable place to play D&D. I have experience with only one House DM, one group and the owner of this place. Can’t say anything about other DMs and other groups. However, as I dealt with the owner, I think what I have encountered is probably representing the spirit of the place.
This place is in a spirit of “authoritarian progressivism”. Everybody is very “accepting” (They/Them/He/She/His/Her friendly); everybody is nice and smiling, but the moment you deviate from the “party line” you are “stabbed in the back” in a very passive aggressive way. If your game does not fit a “Goody Two Shoes”/“Lawful Good Paladin”/” I am here to serve and heal” game style, you are in trouble. I tried to play a more complex character with some shadow aspects. Apparently, this caused people to feel “uncomfortable” and “threatened”, fact that I was never told about directly. I was supposed to guess that some people feel “obviously unease”. I never tried to offend or antagonize anyone and yet I was supposed to guess who chose to be offended by me. Without any warnings I was send an email “Here is you return with taxes for the next session, we don’t want to see you at the table again”. Which is a very passive aggressive/behind the back/coward’s style. When I confronted the DM and the owner about why nobody told me that there was a problem, the DM did not answer me (of course) and the owner said that he is “Too busy running this place to talk to everyone” and “That I was supposed to guess that I am causing unease in other people”. This is a very weird way to respond, taking in account that I am a well-paying customer that brought a couple of more clients to the table, and I am also part of his “business”. On a more personal note, I would say that the owner does have enough time for multiple smoking breaks during the day but could not find 3 min to talk to me before he decided to terminate me. I never threaten any of the players. Not “over the table” and not in the game. My “darker” game stile was targeting the NPCs and the story line itself. The owner may claim he offered to look for a different group for me, but how will this change the reality that I cannot express myself in the game and I will need double guess if I, God forbid, may have offended someone. I am not coming back to this place again and you can make your own...
