This store only appreciates you if you are spending a lot of money with them including their guiding services. This store is very much for the "purists" of fly fishing. The shop helper Pete ignored my brother until it was apparent that my brother was going to buy something. Then, when my brother asked to have line (that he was buying from CRO) put onto his Cabela's reel, Pete gave him a hard time about not wanting to put line on the reel just because he did not buy the reel from CRO.
On top of the poor customer service and not making us feel welcomed... I booked a guided trip with CRO. The first guided trip i did with them was great. The store owner Dan did a half day with me. All of my expectations were met. Dan had extra rods, re-rigged me when i snagged and broke off, taught me different techniques, etc. However, every time after that was a poor experience. I had such a good first experience with Dan, that i always requested to have him guide me. He kept making excuses as to why he could not guide me anymore. He even stated that he does not guide as much due to running the store, which i get. However, i always see him on facebook posting pictures of guided trips he does with other clients. The second time i requested to book a guided trip with CRO, Dan pawned me off onto some other guide. When i showed up to the river the guide did not bring rods, did not bring extra supplies, and did not bring waders for my friend who was new to wading fishing. We ended up canceling the trip even though we showed up to the river after an hour drive to meet. CRO made it up to me which was nice but it put a salty taste in my mouth since then.
I have also used CRO for Christmas presents. I've called the store to place an order for a small box of flies. The first time i did this was great. The present was delivered on time and the recipient loved it. The quality of flies was superb. However the second time i did this , the order was never fulfilled. I did not get a response from Dan until Christmas was long over.
I was instructed NOT to message Dan on facebook (even though he friended me) but instead direct all CRO matters to their business page on facebook, which i get. However every time i message them, it takes forever for them to respond.
In conclusion, it is my opinion and experience that Chagrin River Outfitters only provides excellent customer service to those who are constant big spenders and "purists" at their store. CRO is sub-par when it comes to communication. My opinion is not formed overnight nor from one experience dealing with them. I have been fly fishing for over 10 years and have been a customer of theirs (despite the poor experiences) for...
Read moreChagrin River Outfitters is the best fly shop in Northeast Ohio. It's a small family owned business offering quality gear for the fly fishing enthusiast. There's absolutely no other shop in the area that can provide the experience they offer. Dan & Pete treat every customer with respect, every single time.
These guys carry QUALITY brands, brands we've come to trust such as Orvis, Scott, Simms, Sage and more.
The shop carries a full range of products, everything you need to target any species in the area. Rods, Reels, Line, Fly Tying tools and materials, waders, clothing and so much more. Since he's opened the shop he'd been leading the fishing guide scene and the shop has produced some of the big names in the area.
I moved away from the area 5 years ago and still go back to CRO for my gear. Simply call Dan, place an order and he ships right to my door - and quick. Dan helped me get into saltwater fly fishing this year and provided me two saltwater combos as well as a new complete fly tying set up and we couldn't be happier with his suggestions and quality of the gear.
Couldn't thank Dan and the team...
Read moreI've never bothered to review a business, but felt compelled to do so after visiting this shop. I came in as a novice and Dan could have probably told me that I could catch steelhead in my septic tank with an ice fishing rod but he shot straight with me. I came in looking for an entry level rod/reel combo and I left with a setup that I felt confident with. He also set me up with some materials to cover a couple simple patterns to tie in order to keep my grandfathers hand me down vice warm and in use. Dan is clearly knowledgeable, down to earth, and willing to offer his time to help a customer out. I get the feeling that whether you are inexperienced like myself, or a 50 year veteran of the sport, this shop is the place for you. I certainly could have done some research online and ordered something myself but I would not have had the confidence in my purchase that I received from CRO. I left the shop knowing I had the correct tools for the job in hand. Support local businesses like these! They are an invaluable resource. Thank you Dan and Chagrin...
