If you have a love for oysters and like knowing where your food comes from, you must take a tour with Lowcountry Oyster Co.! Tours run during the week and you can take a 1.5 or 3.5 hour tour. My hubby & I took the 3.5 hour premiere tour which included top notch round trip transportation from Charleston to the farm using Charleston Black Cab Limousine service. This allowed us to sit back and enjoy the trip without any worries.
Our tour started at 9am when we were picked up by our driver Michael, who did a phenomenal job making the 1 hr 15 minute drive to the farm very enjoyable with easy conversation and a comfortable drive in the '22 Lexus ES300 hybrid.
We were met by JB at the Lowcountry Oyster Co. whom started by hooking us up with sunscreen & bug repellant as the mosquitoes are fierce there. He was very welcoming and down to earth which really made the whole tour so enjoyable. We are novices at doing this and I only started eating & enjoying oysters last fall but JB didnt hold that against us! Lol.
We started with a walk through where the oyster seed is underway and about 6 weeks old (see pics). They will get placed in their cages and put into the oyster beds at 12 weeks if I recall correctly.
JB then showed us their custom baskets that the owner Trey made as he was not satisfied with what was out on the market (see pic). JB explained that these traps allow the oysters to have a constant flow of salt water as it has them just under the top of the water versus other traps that put them closer to the bottom and the oysters are dependant on the raising & lowering of the tide. This makes for a much higher salinity in their oysters and oh boy!!! Are they delicious!!! (See pic lol).
We then got on the shiff and took a nice ride out to 1 of 5 oyster beds where a staffer was reloading oyster cages and putting them into the beds (see pic). I can say that JB has a wealth of knowledge about the operation but also about working the ocean along the coast as well as in other countries. We enjoyed hearing of his own personal experiences including working with a member of the team on the Andrea Gale that the movie "The Perfect Storm" was based on and his experience working a pearl oyster farm in Australia. Time on the water was approximately an hour.
When we came back to shore, we were introduced to owner Trey whom we chatted with before going to see where they are in the process of making their own oyster nursery so they can raise their own seed.
The tour concluded with us shucking and eating their freshly harvested lowcountry cups at a picnic table overlooking the water. Our first time shucking and it was a lot of fun! God, the oysters were incredible!!!! I am thrilled they shipped the oysters overnight to you which I am looking forward to doing!
This tour is a must-do when in the area! I am thrilled to have had this unique opportunity and hope you will...
Read moreThe Lowco team is all pro. The cups were phenomenal, meaty, tasty, with the right dose of salinity. We wanted to rep some swag and purchased a hat with our cups which lucky for us did not fit in the lowco cups delivery box. I say lucky, as instead, Malcolm wrote us a handwritten note with thoughtful art to let us know the hat didn’t make it but would be on its way. This was a Father’s Day gift , so though we were slightly bummed it would not be there on Father’s Day, the note had us cracking up for hours given Malcolm’s humorous tone. The hat arrived a few days later and too our surprise it was accompanied by some serious swag. We are chillin in Hawaii and rockin a cool lowco T, gifted to us by the lowco team and our beers are rockin lowco cozies. Thanks dudes. Buy lowco cups, you will not regret doing business with these dudes! The product is 5 stars coupled with 5 star...
Read moreWent on an Oyster Farm tour here with JB. Very informative and the weather was terrific for the boat ride. An awesome arrangement with Black Cab Limousine made our hour trip down there more enjoyable & convenient and our driver, Michael, was fantastic. We shared quite a bit of conversations back & forth which made the whole trip enjoyable. JB is a worldly sea dog with experience in many areas. He showed us the whole interesting operation. I only wish we'd stopped into the store itself. Do y'all ship? 😄 The tastings were a treat at the end & he even taught us how to shuck our own oysters. All in all, a really fun day. I would recommend this tour to anyone even just for the fun of it and, hey, you may just...
