The work I had done was very good, the end product was faultless.
That said, I won't be coming back because of the negative experience. Other people gave very positive feedback about the proprietor, but I felt uncomfortable. The tailor was helping other customers before me who were clearly uncomfortable with the price of a suit rental, and he was unsympathetic to them, ignoring the young man's name and calling him "Johnny," and barking orders for him to stand up, move here, etc.
I came in to have a suit jacket altered that I bought. It was too big and I knew it, but I liked the suit and thought I could have it altered. I was berated for buying a jacket that was too big for me. He quoted me $120 for the alterations. I wish I would've shopped elsewhere, but I felt pressured to accept since I was made to feel foolish for intentionally buying a jacket that was big.
I don't know how much actual work was required, he only chalked two lines on the back of the jacket very quickly. But I've had good alterations done in another city to take fabric out of the torso before that cost me under $40. Again, the work was impeccable, and I don't know what comparative prices are in this area, and I don't know how difficult the alteration actually was. But had I known the price and attitude beforehand, I would not have gone.
The tailor's attitude is a kind of rough charm that I'm sure many find endearing, and if you don't balk at price you'll get very good work. I went there a few months ago, and it's still hanging around in my mind, so I wanted to post in case anyone like me would...
Read moreI felt compelled to write a review (not something I do often) because of the outstanding service and perfect end-product I received at The Valet Shop.
The Owner/Operator, John, is a consummate professional and makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk into the shop. He's an old-school Italian with a quick wit, and he will tell it like it is, but don't mistake this for dismissiveness — this man has decades of experience and knowledge, and can tell you exactly which alterations will best serve you, which sizes you are, which colors & styles will work best for your situation, etc, all at a glance.
John will listen patiently and work with you to get you looking your best. I personally tried a few of his suggestions that I normally wouldn't have selected, and I am very happy I did. Trusting his judgement and expertise will guarantee you end up feeling classy and comfortable in clothing that fits perfectly.
His work might be a little pricier than chain stores or discount places, but you truly get what you pay for. Having respectable, tailored clothing, made of quality materials is an investment to be sure, but a necessary one that every man of a certain age-onward should make. Spending a little more now will pay off for years to come.
I can say with certainty that I'll be a customer of The Valet Shop as long as they stick around. You're not going to find better tailoring anywhere in the Binghamton area. Go in with respect, expect to have a laugh or two, and trust John's judgement — you're going to be very happy you did.
Thanks for the great suit, John. See you for...
Read moreI made a 45 minute trip one way to The Valet Shop because of all of the wonderful reviews and they do women’s alterations as well. I took a pair of $160 jeans - jeans that I loved, fit me perfectly and cannot be replaced - to be shortened. I spent time researching tailors for this reason and found The Valet Shop to be the best option overall. I had confidence after the consult with John’s sister that the work would be immaculate. Both John and his sister were lovely, they even rushed the order and had it completed in a few hours while I waited in Binghamton otherwise I would have had to drive back on Tuesday or when they reopened - which wasn’t off the table for me - but I thought It was extremely kind of them to expedite. I was grateful when I picked up the jeans, paid, tipped and promised to be back for additional work. Once I drove The 45 minutes back home and tried on the jeans, I found one side is a quarter inch shorter than the other and needless to say I am quite sad. I’m not sure what to do with them as I do not like the shortened sides length. I am not asking for a refund or anything like that and I did call the shop to let them know what happened. Update - John did call me and let me know I can come back and they can fix the jeans. I did not return his call to see what this would entail as I also do not want to drive over...
