Game Over Escape Rooms — Local services in Clearwater

This location just opened so this review is meant for constructive criticism that I’m sure will be addressed. I went to the temple of the skull room with my husband and my 9 year old son. My husband and I have done many escape rooms over the years (it’s our favorite date night) but it was our son’s first. We were so excited to do this with him. We chose the temple of the skull room. When we got there we found out they had just opened on Monday (it’s Friday). That honestly excites us even more. The explanation was lacking but there was a video that kind of went over the rules and luckily we had done a million rooms before so we weren’t left in the dark. They do give occasional hints but the voice giving hints were so quiet and mumbled that even when you were in the room you had to pray no one was talking when it came on and when we asked for a repeat, we wouldn’t get it. Once you’ve moved past that first room, those speaker hints still only come over the speaker in the room you start out in so we missed every other speaker clue we got. In the second room, there is a wooden strip that sticks up in the middle of the room that I tripped over twice. Not a regular trip, like almost wiped out completely two separate times. That needs to be made aware to clients before they enter the room and I would even say move it. We didn’t get to the point in the rooms to find out why it was there but figure out another way to move it because someone is going to get hurt. In the second room we opened a box that has arrows and spears in it. When we moved to the next room, we found a hole that clearly needed something to stick into it. As you do in escape rooms, we took what we had and tried to see what would fit and solve that puzzle. The arrows they gave us fit in the hole so we tried to stick them in only to lose them in the hole. We eventually found the correct item to put in there but we couldn’t fit it in the whole way because the arrows from earlier had fallen into the hole, preventing the real key from fitting. We were loudly struggling with this for a long time before I had to go into the starting room and yell that we needed help. When she came in to help us, we informed her of what happened and she told us that they can’t fix that for us and so we had to just stop and give up. It was such a disappointment. We were so excited to share this with our son for his first time and it felt like we were left with no solutions when we were just trying everything, like you’re supposed to with an escape room. We spent over $100 and it definitely didn’t feel worth the price to not even get a chance to try and finish the room. The room was designed well. We got to see three rooms (could be more we just never got past the third room) and they were beautifully designed. This particular room was harder than others we have tried. My main complaints are that the speakers are either too quiet or they should be in every room. It’s completely unhelpful to have a hint playing in a room you are not in, especially if you can’t have it repeated. Also, don’t give items that fit into holes that are going to get stuck and ruin the game. Make the arrows big enough they don’t fit in that hole or make it very obvious the arrows don’t go in there. At the very least, I wish they could have paused the game for us and removed the arrows so we could finish (or try to, it was very hard and I don’t know if we were close). Updated review: We were reached out to by management and offered a complementary room for our previous experience not being so good. We did the Orient Express room and it was very fun. The employee was very kind and made the experience! The room was very interactive and challenging. I’m happy this experience was good, just like the first time we had come here.

The first time I went to this escape room the employee made it an amazing experience, we felt they made us feel like we were actually in a haunted hotel. I didn’t realize how important it was to have a good ‘guide’ working. My second escape room here was terrible because of the employee that was working. She honestly ruined the experience entirely. You could tell she didn’t want to be there, she was very soft spoken, when asking for clues/help one of the responses was “I wouldn’t tell you to do it if you weren’t supposed to do it” with attitude. We were one clue away from escaping and I don’t want to ruin the clues but, I tried to move the piece I needed to to solve the puzzle and the employee told me to put a puzzle back where I had it and solve from there. I was moving it because I had it in the wrong spot and the employee told me to put it back in the wrong spot. We continued trying for minutes to solve it but, ran out of time and it turns out I was moving it to the correct spot and the employee told me not to. At other escape rooms (I’ve been to maybe 100), they will walk you through the last few pieces of what you missed to show you how close you were or what else you needed to do. I had to ask what we were missing because she was rushing us out of the room since she ‘had to hurry and reset it for the other people that booked’ and we were never shown what would’ve happened if we had gotten it. There was no offer to take a picture in the room like other rooms offer and like they had offered the first time I had been at this location. Overall, from her poor attitude, her lack of knowledge about the room, and eagerness to kick us out, the experience I have with this company is tainted. We’ve been to numerous escape rooms and consider ourselves experienced. We took our kids and sister with us to the Alice In Wonderland room. Worst experience ever in an escape room.

The only positive: beautiful decorations. They seemed to have spent their money on that.

The negatives: this was the first time we’ve ever been to a room that was so linear. You had to solve one puzzle at a time to get to the next puzzle. A lot of standing around for group members. Each puzzle lead to the next puzzle and you couldn’t have multiple people working on multiple different puzzles. You all had to solve one at a time.

We pride ourselves in using as few clues as possible. Never have we had to use the clues so much to get through as single room. We were requesting clues time and time again. In addition, there were numerous times she would tell us clues without us even asking.

While we continued our streak of never running out of time in a single room, we left with the feeling like we shouldn’t even celebrate.

One final thought, the first room in Alice In Wonderland is cheap plastic green turf floor and you have to be on your hands and knees to solve the first puzzle. This terrible floor literally cut into my knees it was so uncomfortable.
