What's for dinner tonight? How about some sushi? 🍣

I finally made it to Ken Sushi in Clearwater last night, had been looking forward to trying it for a long time. On the surface, it’s a small Japanese restaurant in a generic strip mall, with the usual extensive menu. The place was packed with what appeared to be a lot of regulars, the food from the kitchen looked very good, and the three sushi chefs were making almost exclusively rolls and other fancy stuff. But people rave about the sushi, and their Facebook page shows a great variety of fine-looking “special” selections. I wasn’t disappointed. I ordered only nigirizushi, mostly specials. The fish was uniformly excellent, portions generous (probably a bit too little shari for the fish), the preparation very good, service slow (my order took about 45min, but the three sushi chefs were all very busy) but good. Selections from the regular menu were hamachi, saba, unagi and anago (you don’t see that often); specials included uni (from Hokkaido), o-toro, Ora King salmon, arctic char, shima aji and tai. The high point, interestingly enough, was the arctic char, I had never had that raw before, it was rich, complex, almost nutty. O-toro was best quality, as were the hamachi and anago. Only negative was that the saba was overmarinated, far too sour. Shari was probably a bit more compressed than it should have been as well. Overall, this was an outstanding dinner and I don’t think you could do much better for sushi in the Tampa Bay area. They do offer an omakase, and I’ll plan on doing that sometime, maybe on a less busy night. Given the selection and quality of high-end and exotic fish, I think this place is a hidden gem and could really give Sushi Rexley in downtown St. Pete (omakase only) a run for their money.

We just moved to this area from Sarasota, and we have constantly been let down by poor quality sushi. Looking for a new sushi restaurant, we stumbled upon Ken Sushi. The quality of Ken Sushi is unmatched for what we have tried in Florida. Outside of omakase, they served us the best quality fish that we have had in the entire state. If you are looking for truly authentic Japanese flavors in a more casual setting, you have found the ideal place. The sushi rice was perfectly seasoned, and every piece of fish was properly portioned and very fresh. You could tell that the chefs put a lot of thought into the quality and flavor pairings of the food that they serve. First, we ordered their beef yaki udon. We received the pork yaki udon instead, but we were not displeased. The udon noodles were cooked to perfection, and their signature sauce was exceptional. For sushi, we ordered everything as nigiri. We ordered their saba, hamachi, maguro, anago, unagi, quail egg, and tamago. Every piece of fish was perfect and just lovely on our taste buds. The tamago was exactly what you would expect, and the quail egg was a solid finish to our first order. The star of our selection was most definitely the sea eel (anago). It was pristinely prepared in traditional 日本人 fashion. We just had to place another order of the anago and the hamachi because they were by far our favorite bites. The service was good, and every member of the staff was very friendly. The atmosphere of this establishment was very enjoyable, and you never would have expected such an astounding sushi restaurant in the area that it resides in. We look forward to trying Sushi Ken’s omakase soon. We will definitely frequent this eatery.

The restaurant was very nice in the inside, and music created a very relaxing ambience. We waited at least 15 min since we were sat to be greeted and given menus. No problem, we weren’t in a rush but was odd considering the waitress that did end up greeting us passed by multiple times. After meeting our waitress she was initially very pleasant. Drinks came quick, appetizers roughly 20 min or so. We ordered the Alaskan crab leg app and edamame, which were excellent. We waited quite a bit of time for our food to come, roughly 40min since ordering, but didn’t mind the wait because when it did come it looked delicious and tasty. I got the spaghetti curry, which was supposed to be a spicy but was actually very sweet, and thought it was okay. My father ordered a plate and didn’t eat 2 bites, the look on his face said it all. He didn’t like his dish one bit. I didn’t think anything of it, but after letting the waitress know she literally shrugged it off, and walked away without saying a word, visibly irritated! My father was simply wanting to order something else but she didn’t come back for another 15min. When she did return she was rude when we tried to order something else and rudely snatched the plate he didn’t eat! At this point we’re ready to leave due to the service, asked for the check and asked if we could get his plate taken off or reduced because he literally didn’t touch it after the first bite (I formerly worked at multiple steak houses as a server, and it would be very common to “comp” a meal a guest didn’t eat or like, this case was both) She rudely said no, nothing she can do, and was not at all concerned with us or empathetic. Drops check off, paid, but before leaving I wanted to speak with a manager to see if they truly do not care if a customer did not like a dish and to let him know about our server. I went up to the front, was not acknowledged by anyone(including our server) and they didn’t seem to care. I asked my waitress if I could speak with the manager, she repeats that she can’t do anything about the dish, keeps going and then gets manager after I asked multiple times. Manager immediately is defensive right away about the dish, almost insulted, and has an attitude. He even said he lost money on our dinner! He eventually offered 15% off, which honestly was ok but would’ve been more than fair to just comp the single dish as that would’ve been less (Bill was $180 or so) But he then says it’s impossible to do anything because our card was already ran, that we’re out of luck and that was it. Said don’t worry about it, have a good night. Just impressed with how terrible the customer service was...

I have eaten at Ken's countless times in the past two years. They've got the best sushi in Clearwater, probably the best sushi in Pinellas county - and I don't claim as much on a whim.

They've got amazing sushi at great, affordable prices - especially considering the top notch quality - but their other menu options are also great. I love the Bayside Bridge roll, personally - can't get enough of it.

My boyfriend and I are addicted to their fried rice and get it 99.99% of the time along with our sushi order, but I also adore their red curry, which comes in a generous tub when ordering out, so much that it's easily two meals.

While we often order out, we were fortunate enough to dine in before the pandemic and their dining room is so charming, intimate and perfect for a date night.

Also, for what it's worth, during the pandemic I feel everyone at Ken's took it seriously (and, to be clear: still does, as of writing this Jan 2021) and always does their best to follow expert guidelines, social distancing, and never opened their dining room to full capacity too early - unlike so many other chain restaurants around here foolishly had.

As a consumer, this tells me that Ken not only cares about his customers, but he also cares about the health and safety of his employees. I was more than happy to order takeout from Ken's anyway, but doing so during the pandemic was reinforced by the fact that we were supporting a family business with owners that care about their staff.

Bottom line - best sushi in Pinellas, my personal favorite sushi place in all of Tampa Bay area, delicious fried rice, great staff, clean chic dining room, and a great local business to support during the trying times of covid-19 who keeps the safety and health of their staff at...
