Let me preface this by saying I do not leave negative reviews. I believe in uplifting businesses with praise, not criticism. However, I had a shady experience, and I encourage potential sellers to read on. I will not return to this business, nor will I refer them.
After reading several positive reviews, I decided to take my chances with a few quirky items from my closet. We were greeted upon arrival and encouraged to check out neighborhood businesses while Stacy* evaluated my items. My husband and I went for a brief walk down the street and returned pleasantly surprised to find several items the store was interested in purchasing.
There was a stack of clothes on the counter, a pair of lightly used chunky-heeled Timberland boots, a new purple Kate Spade bangle, and one decorated hand-shaped earring with dangling crystals (which I found odd at the time) that she specifically identified. I remember she commented about how someone would love them, and she âdoesn't typically buy boots in the summerâ but loved mine due to the style. Regarding the stated items, Stacy* asked if I would accept $70. I verbally agreed to sell the shoes, stack of clothes, earrings, and the Kate Spade bracelet for $70 via Venmo.
When I returned home, I realized there were four pairs of earrings missing, including a gorgeous pair of dangly purple druzy evil eyes - Stacy* did not indicate interest in them but shadily set them on the side. I should have known better, but I give everyone the benefit of the doubt until they give me a reason not to.
I sat on it for an hour, and the more I recalled, the angrier I became. Looking back, I noticed the extra earrings were set aside, but my brain didn't process them. She intentionally set them on the other side of the clothes, hidden underneath one of the garments. They were not obviously visible.
I decided to return to the business to collect the non-disclosed earrings. The store was busy, and I did not want to make a scene. I calmly asked to speak with Stacy*, and she pulled us aside. I told her that I was unaware she wanted the additional four sets of earrings and that I would like them back. After some initial âconfusion,â she recalled two of them immediately and handed them to me. It took her a few minutes to find the third set. I had to point to the evil eyes (already displayed and marked at $30) and specifically ask for them back. Initially, she said she thought she disclosed everything on the counter (see what she did there?), including the four sets of earrings. I told her no, she did not identify them the same way she did the other items, and that I wanted them back.
I was mind-blown when she agreed and said, âThe only thing we would have to sort out is Venmo because I already paid you.â I stared at her blankly, primarily out of complete and total shock. She wanted to take back money for something she didnât pay for? Her hands were shaking, and she looked anxious. My face must have made her nervous because she quickly added, âOr we could call it even if that's ok with you.â I said yes, gently took my items, and began to leave. Then she said, âMan, I really loved those earrings.âđ«š
Mind you, the pair we agreed upon was also on display and for sale at $20. Mostly, I am astonished that an adult woman tried to steal items from me and thought she could get away with it. The mind has to wonder: Is it because I'm young and of mixed race? Did she assume I was naive and inexperienced? Is she just a shoddy business owner? Whatever the answer, I am not impressed.
I recommend you take pictures of everything before you have them reviewed, or stay and supervise. Know your worth. Learn from my mistake and ask to review each item independently. I understand the process of thrifting/consignment, but where is the morality? Isnât the world messed up enough already?
Anyway, I am currently wearing the purple evil eye earrings that I should have kept in the first place. Everything works out how it should; I wish Ashleyâs Attic nothing but the business...
