Im from New Mexico, born and raised and while I live in Kansas City now, I buy Hatch Green Chile every year. Usually about 150 lbs per season. I belong to a couple of New Mexico food groups and often the debate comes up between Hatch Green Chile and Pueblo Green Chile. To say Im a purist when it comes to Green Chile is semi-accurate. Ive only ever had Green Chile from New Mexico and most of the time (not always) thats been from Hatch.
Over the weekend of the October 9/10th, we were in Denver for a wedding. Im a huge Broncos fan and have been for most of my 53 years on this planet. Sadly, they werent in town but I went to the stadium anyway and took lots of pictures. Then my wife took me up to Estes Park. Very beautiful.
When we got back to our hotel room, I made the comment that too bad there wasnt a Weinerschnitzel in Denver. The nearest was Colorado Springs. So when we left Denver to go back to Kansas City we decided to go out of our way to Colorado Springs to get Weinerschnitzel I also was going to get some Green Chile when I left Denver to take home and roast to taste the difference so instead of getting it near Denver I did a search near Colorado Springs and thats where I found Vigil Farms.
We found the location and by pure coincidence or maybe just divine intervention it was near the Wienerschnitzel. I got me a half bushel of mild and medium and we left. We stopped at Wienerschnitzel and I decided the heck with that, I want to smell it roasting so I went back and had her roast it and also got a big bag of Pinto Beans.
I have to say, the young lady who was there roasting it said she was the owner and was very friendly and enthusiastic about her products. It was worth it just to meet her but the real goodness was the green chile.
The green chile was much bigger, much meatier than anything I have received from the hatch region growers in quite some time and the taste was phenominal.
We got it home, I let it sweat in the bag the hole trip home and enjoyed the smell filling the rental jeep....sorry Enterprise :)
Once home, we packaged it, peeled some, diced some and put it in the freezer in 1lb containers. Ive been eating it directly out of the containers its so good. Tonight, the wife is finally mixing it with something, our Taco meat but I have really enjoyed it just by itself.
To answer the question, Pueblo Chile is every bit as good as Hatch Green Chile, if not better, in my personal opinion and if I lived nearby or they shipped, I would be buying all my green chile from Vigil Farms.
I'll check into shipping later ;)
Thanks Vigil Farms. You're doing Colorado and your...
Read moreIt’s not closed for good and I don’t know what any of these other stupid reviews are complaining about. It’s pretty basic you show up you order your chilies and they roast them for you. I paid a reasonable price for half a bushel of big Jim’s, they were roasted to perfection and they taste wonderful. The two people that were there that took my order and my money were pleasant. Told me a little bit about their farm and about the different chilies and I went on about my day. . It’s not that difficult people, it’s not that deep. It’s a seasonal chili roasting stand, and they do...
