American Mattress — Local services in Crystal Lake

My mom was looking for a value mattress to use when out of town guests come to stay. Her planning ahead skills need some attention and we were looking for a mattress set she could purchase and either take home right away or have delivered ASAP for guests coming the same night. We stopped at Verlo across the street, but they didn't have anything in her price range and limited supply of what was available on the spot.

American Mattress was the store she originally wanted to go to. Mattress stores are many and right within a few doors of one another in Crystal Lake. I wish we had just stopped at AM first as it would have saved trying to cross over Hwy 14 traffic.

Bill (the store manager) was very friendly upon our arrival and asked us what we were looking for. I was a bit hesitant after our first store visit across the way that they would have anything within our lower price range. She was looking for a queen mattress set for around or under $500. After letting Bill know our requirements: price, size and quick availability he was extremely helpful letting us know that he had several options and started walking us to the area where we could try them out.

Mom found a mattress she was happy with and went forward with the purchase. Bill was knowledgable and patiently answered all of her questions. He was also extremely kind and acted like he didn't even hear the typical family back and forth arguing that shopping brings out (you know what I'm talking about).

After a lot of debate between my mom and I we decided to try and get the mattress on top of my car. I was concrened about putting a queen mattress on my compact Hyundai Accent, but Bill said it would be no problem. He didn't miss a beat when I came back into the store to let him know we wanted to take it right away even though I had left less than five minutes prior. Pulled around back to the store and he had both mattress and box spring on top of my car and secured tightly. Everything made it to my mom's home safely and her guests were sleeping comfortably that evening.

I was impressed that the store manager was working on a Saturday night. He let us know that this was a family buisness (bonus points in my book) and they'd been there almost 30 years. Amazing! He said he works every weekend which I also thought was impressive. You can tell that he likes his job and he defintely made this stressfull last minute purchase easy for my mom and myself as her designated helper. I will be back when it's time for my new...

The customer service I received at the local Crystal Lake store was one of the worst I have experienced. When I called about a specific mattress I was told to come into the store and that I should bring a list of any mattress I want to look at. When I got there it was when things went south. I was told the store would not honor the online price. It was a close out mattress that I ultimately wanted./decided on.

The salesmen (2) of them told me I would have to pay nearly double to buy in store. They said the company would not allow them to honor the online pricing. The online price was $950 and in store it would be $1,600! I asked why and they said it because I would probably get a dirty floor sample model from online and the one there was not a floor sample. Then they showed me lesser quality mattresses that were not on close out as an alternative.

They also told me if I bought the nearly double priced close out mattress from them I’d also have to pay $100 for delivery. However on the website, it clearly stated delivery was free. When I pointed that out, they told me no that was only for new model mattresses. I then checked the website angain from my phone and that is not noted anywhere.

Lastly they told me I could only get 6 months free financing through synchrony bank when online it stated purchases over $999 had a 12 month free financing option if you qualify.

Ultimately I felt insulted that the salesmen were flat out lying and using intimidating sales tactics on me. I went home and ordered the same close out mattress online for $878 ( I found an online coupon) the matching box aping for $300 and a mattress cover for $69.99 ( Incase the mattress actually was stained) plus free delivery and I applied and was approved for finance online with 12 months no interest myself!!!!!!

I’m also happy to report that everything was delivered this morning. The mattress was in perfect brand new condition without a single stain or smudge. What a relief that I did not let those salesmen pressure me out of over $700 dollars because it was all false information, probably to make higher commission, which is not cool!!!!

The mattress itself (Beautyrest L Black Series) is awesome and the delivery went very well. The service stunk and I would never go to that location ever again nor would I recommend anyone...

This is a hard review to write. I have purchased several items from this store in the past and always have had pleasant experiences. Today however, I bought an adjustable bed frame to replace the original fixed frame that I purchased with the set from American Mattress . The delivery men who delivered it were the worst human beings I have ever dealt with. First, they refused to take the old base away. Maybe my fault because I didn't inquire about this service, but American Mattress has always removed the old items.Second, they set up the base with adjustable legs in the lowest position. My wife asked them to readjust them to make the frame a little higher and they refused. "You told us how to do it we don't make changes" I could deal with the first two situations, but then they refused to remove the old base because they couldn't fit it down the stairway. I told them "it went in, it has to go out. Perhaps if I removed the railing" "They said "we don't have time for that." I said "it will only take a couple of minutes" Still they refused. After they left it took me exactly 6 minutes to remove the railing and take the base out of the house. I'm not sure that I have ever encountered people like this in my life. I felt sorry for the GM in Crystal Lake. It's clear he had no control over the sub contracted delivery men. Another example of upper management making decisions, probably based on $, with no clue as to how it impacts customers.
