Update: Literally MINUTES after posting this review I got a call from Brass Tacks. My barber (I don't want to name names that seems rude.) saw my review and called me to apologize and offer a free trim in the future to make it right. I boosted the review a few stars for the great support. When my beard is good for another trim I'll take him up on that offer and see if I can delete this one and post a 5 star review!
It was a good atmosphere and very pleasant experience, but then I had an unfortunate discovery when I got to take another look in my car mirror before leaving. My appointment was on 9/6/2018.
I went in for a beard trim, after 8-9 months of unchecked growth as an experiment. I would have kept growing but I had to shoot a video for a formal event within a week so it was time for the experiment to end. I didn't know 100% what I was looking for, but I had some thoughts and mainly I wanted to turn all my months of work into something that didn't make me look like the kind of person who grows a beard just for the heck of it without making sure it fit with the rest of their face. Mold the chunk of marble into an amazing statue.
I'm pretty happy with the much more rounded look of my beard, though it's hard to tell because I was so used to what I looked like before. I'm less sure about my mustache, which was a pretty walrus-y one that I didn't know what to do with the ends of (hence leaving it up to a professional). "Clean up the mustache" apparently meant turning it from handlebar style into a straight down uniform short length separated-from-the-top-lip style, with somewhat wispy beard-connecting ends that look okay now but I think might grow out in a funky way compared to the upper lip.
So I'm not giving this low of a review simply because I don't like the cut.. I was treated nicely despite the lack of communication about changing the style of my mustache (we only established that I wanted to clean everything up and get a more rounded look on the beard) and I’m cool with trying out the style I have now (I can always just keep growing, it's not like I have to shave anything off and start from scratch.) My review is so negative because when I left and was checking it out up close in the visor mirror of my car, I realized there was small chunk buzzed down to almost nothing on one side just above the corner of my mouth. My mustache is just asymmetrical enough for it to show up. You can't put hair back on once it's off so I don't really know what to do about this except for let it grow. Kind of a bummer end to the experience. Fortunately I've been asking if people notice it and they have to have it pointed out, but still I feel like a mistake was made on my very anticipated first beard trim.
I also didn't know what to do after realizing it was there. I'm not a very loud angry person so I wasn't going to go storm back into the place and demand stuff, what was that going to accomplish? My experience seems to be in the minority of what you see here, so your mileage may vary with with...

Hard to find a decent cut these days, glad that’s finally over.
I’ve had the same barber for fourteen years. I find it hard to venture out and give someone that trust to mold you confidence into our one attribute that we have somewhat control over, OUR HAIR.
I found Brass Tacks the other day looking for local cuts around me that were open on a MONDAY!! Holliday weekend even! And I’m impressed! I walked in and stepped down into a welcoming slice of authentic Americana vibe to a free beer on tap and comfortable seat to wait till my appointment was time. Being 6 in the afternoon with walk-in appointment call a few hours before hand I was grateful!
In return I was given the best experience in a cut I’ve had in 14 years.
Thanks to Ki, I will be back My friends will come here, I will continue to rave about this spot I will not stop I will be back. Thank You! Brass Tacks
And note to the leadership or whoever makes the calls there to get things done…. Maybe desk attendant or a floor manager could help manage pushing that awesome product and retail y’all have. Guest deserve that notification and time that your barber may not have the time to give while giving such an awesome cut.
Hell, I’m off a few days a week… see...
Read moreI have been going to Brass Tacks for about a year, and even though it's a pretty long trip for me to make it out to Bishop Arts, I keep coming back! Alex has been my barber for most of my stint at the shop - he is a really relaxed and personable guy. He is always very kind and pays a lot of attention to the details, and he is always working with me to make small adjustments so my hair can look it's best.
Over time, my hairstyle has changed and improved a great deal because of Alex, and it seems like every time I visit I have a clearer vision of what I want. I always have a good time chatting with him and feel equally as comfortable to just chill if I'm not up to a long conversation.
The vibe of the shop is really awesome for me - they have a pool table and a keg of free beer, couches and barstools all over and plenty of open space so you'll never feel out of place. There's also a bathroom and a very small antique store/gift shop attached. They play all kinds of music from Hip-Hop/Rap to Rock, Metal and Radio - it's always a surreal treat to hear some MF DOOM when I'm walking in.
I enjoy the experience every time and I highly recommend it even if you have to make a special trip to South Dallas - do yourself a favor and take the...
