Pros: -Nice space -Can trim ends without balding you -Can shape hair nicely -Olaplex treatment softens hair
Cons: -30 minutes late to appointment- no communication -Tripple books clients and has no assitant to help -Burned me several times during my silk press -Rough while washing/detangling -Took a break to eat during my appointment -Not skilled at styling short, straight hair -Will not discount her prices if she is late/customer is unhappy with her services/she makes you late because of her double bookings
I arrived at her shop directly at my appointment time as she requests on her site (COVID precautions) but she was nowhere to be found. I called her 5 mins later at 1:05p and she told me that she was down the street. She did not walk into the building until 1:28p and but then had to go back to her car to get towels. She explained that she had to get her hair blown out and trimmed and ran into construction on the way back. It would have been nice to get a text from her prior to arrival that she was running behind.
1:35p comes, and we are starting to wash my hair, she talks to me a little about my hair regimen and makes small talk, but her handling technique was ROUGH y'all. I don’t know if it was her nails or the fact that it felt like she was just rushing but she did not handle my crown delicately while washing.
Next, I was placed under the dryer for my deep conditioning treatment. For the next 25 mins she began blow drying, trimming and flat ironing her own hair. I was under the dryer long enough for her to run through her own head once and greet another customer that she’d booked during my session. She started on the other client (2:15p) and got her washed/conditioned and then came back to me (2:30p). While detangling/blow drying my hair, she pulled harder than my liking, but I figured it was bc my hair was dry and full of split ends. Meanwhile, another scheduled customer came in and Sonnie’s lunch arrived. She stopped for a few moments to eat then came back to me. DURING MY SILK PRESS, SHE BURNED ME SEVERAL TIMES. She apologized for it once while in the front of my head, but as you can see in the pics, I HAVE BURNS ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE. My scalp is very sensitive to the touch 2 days post appointment, and I’ve cancelled my braid appointment due to this. After she was done flat ironing my hair, she tried to bump curl it... I looked like James Brown!! She could tell that I wasn’t a fan of it and made the comment that “I don’t really do short hair”. I asked: “Why would you tell me at the end of the appointment?” and her response was: “You said you wanted it straight”. I paid 175.00 for a silk press/style and left in a plastic shower cap bc I hated it but didn’t want the humidity to undo the work I’d been burned for. I waited until we were away from her other clients to ask for a discount on the service because of her tardiness/technique, she stated that she doesn’t discount. Honestly, if you’re going to reschedule your client last minute, then be 30 mins late w/o communication, triple book their session/eat during their appointment, make them late returning to work and burn them- discounting the visit is the least you could do. The next day, she went on IG asking customers about things they’d like to see from their stylist. I truly hope that she takes their sound advice and practices what she posts because I was not silked by Sonnie, my hair was snatched, my face and scalp was singed during the press, and I left feeling scammed AF. Take your money to someone who has time to treat your hair as a crown and not an inconvenience. My hair didn't...

I’m writing this review not just as a dissatisfied customer but as someone who genuinely felt threatened, unsafe, and trapped inside The Curl Spot.
I’ve worked with Tae before without issue, including an appointment just two weeks prior. However, my most recent visit escalated into something completely unacceptable — not just unprofessional, but potentially illegal and dangerous.
During this visit, a simple conversation about at-home hair drying turned tense when Tae became unexpectedly hostile and confrontational. I calmly explained how I followed her previous instructions but had questions about whether my tabletop dryer was drying my hair effectively. Rather than offering clarification, Tae’s tone became aggressive. She began raising her voice, cutting me off, and accusing me of misusing the dryer — despite the fact that she had never specified what type of dryer to use in prior instructions.
When I tried to end the unproductive conversation and expressed that I would prefer to leave without completing the hair service — despite having already paid the deposit — Tae escalated the situation even further.
She proceeded to lock the only door in the building — the same door that functions as the entrance AND the emergency exit. This left me physically unable to leave the salon. She then stood in front of the locked door, blocking my exit, and accused me of trying to leave without paying.
To be clear: when a building has only one door, locking it is the same as blocking the emergency exit. This is a serious fire code violation and an extreme safety hazard.
Tae then threatened to call the police (which I encouraged because I knew that this a serious violation of public safety protocols). I felt completely unsafe — to the point that I called a witness to be on standby while simultaneously sending Venmo payment because I was genuinely concerned for my safety. Even with payment sent over, Tae continued blocking the exit door.
This was no longer a disagreement about hair — it was now an issue of being unlawfully detained and prevented from exiting a business.
🚫 Being locked inside a business against your will is NEVER acceptable under any circumstances. Not only does it violate basic customer rights, but it is also a potential violation of fire safety laws, false imprisonment statutes, and professional licensing requirements.
This experience was traumatizing, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable. No client should ever be subjected to this type of treatment. A salon should be a place where clients feel safe, respected, and valued — not threatened, yelled at, falsely accused, or physically prevented from leaving.
I strongly encourage anyone considering this business to seriously think twice until significant...
Read moreI will start by saying they are good hair stylist and if you want a cut or a press they will deliver there. That is why I will give 3 stars and not deduct more for areas she is lacking. This review is not in malice but I think she should be aware of what she is doing and if she does improve I will update review. I have been going to Sonnie for over 2 years now and she has cut my curly hair and pressed it as well. I do feel though she is pricey for the level of service you receive.
I feel at this price point she should be ON TIME. She is always about 30 or more min late as I said I have been going for 2 years so this is not a one off thing. Not sure if she overbooks, adds people in, lets people come in way too late but I think if I am paying 250+ for a haircut you should be on time. I have spoken to a few of her clients that have left because of this. It is not just your initial wait either you will wait more at other points of service while she is styling someone else hair; so expect at least 1hr of just wait time. People who shell out that for a haircut do not want to wait.
She is somewhat rude. She generally does not greet you when you walk into salon other than have a seat over there. I remember my first time she was with a client and she just told me to sit down. No, hi I am Sonnie nice to meet you I will be with you in a moment. No just sit there for 30+ minutes. Once she is working on you she is better but still very rough around the edges. I can recall more than one experience with me or with her dealing with someone else that I felt she was rude and you could see it clients face. It is not just Sonnie but the other stylist Tae is rough around the edges as well and can be rude. On one visit Tae was openly complaining to Sonnie about one of her clients which I thought was very unprofessional.
She is rough with your wash as she has long nails so she can never properly massage your scalp and never gets soap out of your ears.
Overall salon experience could be better at this price-point as well. If I was paying 100 something maybe but she wants top dollar. The salon is not super clean. It is not filthy but could be better for sure. After she finishes the client you waited 30 minutes for she takes a towel and just dusts off the other persons hair so the chair is never really that clean. She could offer a beverage or something as well.
Overall good stylist that should work on some things if she would like to improve her customers...
