My pawn expired a day ago, and I showed up first thing the next morning to address it by redeeming it. Although they have an app, you're not able to do this online, you have to go into the store. Despite being in their lobby one hour after they opened, I was told I would still be charged for an entire month. To "compromise," the male employee said he would charge me for half the month, which is still unreasonable, especially considering the amount of business I’ve brought to this shop over time.
When I pointed out the unfairness, he dismissed me by saying, "If I do it for you, I have to do it for everyone." I replied, "You should—it’s the right thing to do," to which he simply rolled his eyes. After withdrawing money from the ATM, another customer who witnessed the exchange approached me and suggested I ask for the owner, saying the treatment I received wasn’t right.
When I did ask for the owner, the situation shifted immediately. The gentleman agreed to waive the fee without issue. This interaction highlights my main concern: this business preys on customers who don’t know their rights or aren’t confident enough to push back. This is an unacceptable way to operate.
Pawn shops serve vulnerable communities, and it is unethical to take advantage of that. Charging for an entire month when an account is expired by less than 24 hours is predatory. This experience has left me feeling disrespected and frustrated, and I will not return—not just to this shop, but to any pawn shop that operates this way.
Pawn shops should be subject to stricter regulations to ensure fair treatment of customers. Businesses like this should not be allowed to exploit people simply because they can.
When I first brought in this piece, it was almost a year ago and staff was very friendly. I felt like I was in good hands now. Staff is rude and short. You are treated as if you are a complete burden, truly unprofessional behavior from the women behind the counter. I'm shocked. It was NOT always like this.
I also would like to add that I have pawned this piece once before at a very popular pawn shop. When I got it out, it was polished, cleaned and presented to me with care. This pawn shop gave me back my chain, dirty with hair wrapped around it, exactly how it was given to them. How can you trust a jewlery store who doesn't even care about the jewelery that is in its possession? Either the owner doesn't know of the shenanigans that's taking place, or they have made too much money to care. I am a brick and mortar business owner in Detroit. I would never treat a...

Read moreI just came back from American jewelry and loan. I was waiting on a family member. And they would not let me go to the bathroom. They don’t let anybody go to the bathroom. Why would somebody spend their money at a place? They won’t let the customer go to the bathroom. I had to drive to the McDonald’s down the street. And I am highly irritated. They make enough money off of people to have a public restroom. They could put a porta potty outside. (I wouldn’t use it, but in case of emergency at least I could go to the bathroom.)
I would say that they were racist and discriminatory, however, there was a little boy who was of the European persuasion and they didn’t let him use the bathroom either.
One lady took a $300 loan off of $5000 ring. Now if she don’t go back and get that ring, do you know how much money they would make? And she can’t even go to the bathroom in that place. It’s not like they’re robbing people because people voluntarily pond the valuable items and take a pittance for their property. But to do that kind of business and not let people go to the bathroom oh, I would never. When I was waiting for my family member I was looking at some diamond tennis bracelets. I stood there for over 20 minutes. No one offered to see if I needed any help. So the service was horrible. All the while I’m busting my bladder trying to wait on my family to arrive. Please don’t shop at this place. Please demand better treatment than that. You can go to Zeidman‘s on Evergreen in 10 mile, it’s clean and they have a very nice brand new public restroom.
But please don’t shop at American jewelry and loan. Please don’t spend your money where people don’t let you go to the bathroom. Please demand better treatment...
