There were a few good teachers, but honestly, I'm more concerned about one teacher and how the school handled my experience with him. I had a math teacher, who I'll refer to by his initials (BN), who shamed students, refused to accommodate my disabilities (and likely those of other students), and didn't even speak well enough English to be properly understood by the students.
Shaming: when a student didn't understand a problem / the answer, BN would repeatedly ask them why he did a certain step or how he came to the answer, singling them out and eventually causing other students to laugh at them because they were being embarrassed so pointedly. Refusal to accommodate: when I brought my accommodations slip for him to sign, he didn't even read over it; he wrote his name and handed it back as if he's not supposed to keep a copy for himself. When it was time for testing, he didn't contact me or respond to my messages/emails about it and I ended up taking the test in the classroom instead of in the library like I was meant to. That's all without even mentioning that he didn't write the formulas for equations on the board unless asked specifically for whatever formula was needed (nobody asked for any during the first test, my guess is that they were too afraid he'd publicly shame them for not knowing how to do it already). I just want to point out that not accommodating disabilities is actually ILLEGAL. Poor English: listen. I'm not racist. But I'd like to know who exactly thought it made sense to have a person, who doesn't even understand English well enough to decipher the questions of his students, teach English math classes. Not only could he not adequately understand us, most students were constantly commenting on how THEY couldn't understand HIM. Don't even get me started on the grades. I dropped the class soon after the midterms, but jeez, nearly EVERYONE failed those tests. The only people who got above a 40 were people I'd noticed entered the class Already Knowing How To Do Algebra, and even they only scraped by with a 75-85. If 90% of your class fails the tests, and it's not due to them slacking off, that's not a problem with the students, that shows a fundamental problem with the class and the teacher. I saw multiple people from this class during the next semester, and I think one or two of them had actually (barely) passed the class.
When my mother (I was 16 when I took this class) attempted to say something to the school about all of this, she was promptly dismissed and nothing was done about it. Once again, the negligence and refusal to accommodate disabled students is ILLEGAL. This last part is just stupid but I wanna mention it. My mother didn't know my teacher's name, so she tried to mention him to staff by saying "I don't know his name, I just know he's a Hispanic math teacher", and this lady, the lady helping her, had the gall, nay, the BALLS to say "I'm sorry, we refer to people by NAME here, not by RACE."... YOU WORK AT A COLLEGE AND YOU DON'T KNOW THAT "HISPANIC" ISN'T A RACE? Dude. DUDE. "Hispanic" refers to a person who speaks spanish. There are white Hispanics. There are black Hispanics. ALL that means is "this is a math teacher whose first language is spanish". Maybe if you took the corn husks out of your ears for a second you'd...
Read moreMy experience with Melondy Martin, Director of the Dental Hygiene Program at West Georgia Technical College, has been deeply troubling and emotionally exhausting. As a student, I expect a learning environment led with professionalism, compassion, and accountability — unfortunately, Ms. Martin has demonstrated the complete opposite.
Beyond that, her leadership style is completely unprofessional. She has created a hostile learning environment that leaves students feeling unsupported, unheard, and dehumanized. Her behavior reflects poorly on the values of the college and undermines the integrity of the Dental Hygiene Program.
This is not just my story — I’ve spoken to other students who have experienced the same lack of support and dismissiveness. This is a pattern, not an isolated incident.
West Georgia Technical College must take this seriously. A person in a leadership position, especially one that directly impacts students’ mental health, education, and futures, should be held to the highest standards of integrity and compassion. Ms. Martin has failed to meet even the minimum expectations of a director, let alone an educator.
I am calling for her immediate removal from both her position as Director and her role at the college altogether. This is about protecting students, preserving the reputation of the Dental Hygiene program, and ensuring that no one else has to go through what I and others have endured under her...
Read moreExtremely unsatisfied with the registrars department. Twice they have been late and almost of no use when it comes to getting transcripts sent to UWG on time. Last semester my student had information that verified both receipt, opening, and reading of her request via email by an employee prior to all deadlines needed. It was only upon calling that lady out after several attempts to get her records that someone finally complied. There was little to no apology for financial aid and classes being dropped because of this. Again, my student is to begin nursing classes tomorrow morning and has just received an alert that transcripts have not been sent to UWG AND HER AID IS DROPPED. No one appropriately answers the phone and my student who is working today is in panic mode of what to do. This is not okay. Professionals who expect students to behave professionally and timely as responsible people should be met with and given the...
