I've been with LA Fitness since it was a corner spot in the now K&G/ theater/ Hispanic mall in Duluth. With that being said, the last couple of years at Sugarloaf have been the most unpleasant and most unprofessional in my history with them. Where are the mgrs like Danny who used to be there. Those that are here now are not displaying that love for fitness that spills over into running a gym effectively. I feel like I am not a welcomed guest in an establishment that I'm paying to be a guest. I love the convience of the location. That's the one star I'm giving. Here are my concerns...it's lengthy. I'm tired because I've reached out locally and to corporate with no improvements. I'm tired. The lack of leadership that is fitness driven is low to non-existent. It appears that securing new members and new personal training clients is the top goal. If it wasn't for that, it is easy to think that the young kids at the desk, run the facility. The mgt and other staff members at the side desks just stare at you when you enter. You, the guest, initiates contact as you enter and they look at you as if you have offended them....I thought when you are a guest and walk into an establishment, the staff should be greeting you first. Their ability to make members feel valued is not there. -Fitness minded staff that LA Fitness provided just a few short years ago made sure the workout equipment was in good working order. Many machines remain broken for months at a time. If you want a quick cardio session on a daily basis, Sugarloaf is the place. But if you are a serious fitness minded member needing more than cardio and a squat rack, then Sugarloaf often disappoints. Wasting my energy, gas, and time.
-Can we talk about the spin bikes? Obviously, natural wear & tear is expected. However, a great bit...maybe 25% of the bikes are not really fit to use. Gears do not stay in place. Saddles are wobbly causing ankle & shin/tibia discomfort during the session. Seats are split and tearing some our clothes . Now, there are only 20+ bikes available instead of 31+. The app was not initially updated to reflect the decrease in bikes so I wasted a trip to get to class and couldn't get a bike, even though I was on time. You can sign up for the class but the instructors do not enforce the list. There is a housekeeper who works so hard...she does her best but she can't do it all. However, when she is NOT working or taking an extended time off, the ladies restroom is in a condition that the health department should be contacted. The trash overflows, no hand soap, paper towels, the God awful smells from not emptying the sanitary napkin cans, the morning roach greeting committee...but the worst of all....not having tissue paper for a full day or two to properly clean yourself as a modern human after using the restroom. It is quite disgusting and very demeaning. But the staff uses the now closed down kids club restroom....so hey, the way us peasants have to use a bathroom is not of their concern. I guess.
This location is still not opening on time. If the hired staff is not doing their job, why isn't the Operations Manager coming onsite to make sure it's members are taken care of? However, there is no issue in closing on time.
-General tidyness...it's understandable that many members lack gym etiquette. There is no re-racking happening to get a proper workout in. It is very rare to see MANAGEMENT setting the example by going around and picking weights/plates that low gym etiquette lacking members leave where they were. It's very ok for mgt to interact at the front desk with members and from time to time generally mention re-racking the weights and where sanitizer bottles can be found.
Sugarloaf LA Fitness MANAGEMENT, you are chasing your members away. It's...

Overall management has gotten worse for the past few years I've been a member. I was deadlifting one night and was approached by some of the employees to put the weight down more lightly. I agreed and tried my best to keep it quiet but was interrupted by another employee who said I was still too loud. He threatened to revoke my membership if I didn't follow orders, so I decided to quit myself.
The employee took me to the manager, and the manager tried to sway me into keeping my membership. He wanted the gym to be a deadlift-free zone, so I told him that it would be best for the both of us if I just left. But he was persistent in a weird, offensive way.
He told me that if I ever get a slipped disk from doing deadlifts, he would gladly reinstate my membership. He also told me that there was once a kid who also discontinued his membership due to employees telling him to be more quiet with his deadlifts. Apparently, in the next few days, he came back to reinstate his membership after hurting his back. How does this even make any sense? He then tried to tell me that there were several people who were being loud that night and implied that maybe they had me mixed up a few times.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing from the manager. I actually thought he was joking. He wasn't.
Another concern I have with the gym is with their unqualified personal trainers. I've noticed that the number of full-time personal trainers in the gym went down over the past few years. Now, I don't think there are any full-time personal trainers; instead, some of their employees do personal-training part-time. This is concerning because they don't look like they have much experience and consideration towards their clients. They don't teach proper form for the compound lifts, and it almost seems like they don't even have their personal training certification, as required by LA Fitness. And yet, they expect members to pay high rates for training that may actually end up hurting them.
In summary, do yourself a favor and lift elsewhere. But If you must lift in this facility, do NOT trust the managers/employees, and most importantly, do NOT receive personal...

HORRIBLE level of cleanliness and facilities!
It is nothing abnormal at this location to never have paper towels in the dispensers and have the locker room a mess. That is a frustration i have just had to deal with. But today took it to another level and something HAS TO BE DONE.
The water fountains were disgusting and look like they have not been cleaned thoroughly much less wiped down in over a week! Luckily I know to bring my own water when going to this location.
Every single garbage can was overflowing in the locker room causing paper towels, deodarant sticks, hangers, and bottles to be scattered across the floor and counter tops.
THERE WAS A HUGE PILE OF TRASH STACKED UP BY THE STAIRS IN THE GYM AREA. Some of the trash wasnāt even in bags so it scattered on the floor just waiting to be kicked around by someone. THIS IN UNACCEPTABLE!
I went to wash my hands after working out and it took me trying 3 soap dispensers and 4 paper towel holders to finally get something.
I also went to take a shower and none of the showers had soap in the dispensers. The showeres themselves were FAR from clean and look like they havenāt been touched in two weeks. There was mold/mildew built up all of the shower and curtain.
If all this wasnāt bad enough. I HAD TO LEAVE THE GYM AND GO TO BURGER KING TO USE THE RESTROOM. There are only three toliets in the locker room, and for a gym the size of LA Fitness that is cutting is close. However toilet #1 has been ātemporarily unavailableā for close to three weeks now. Toilet #2 not only didnāt have toilet paper, it was also unfit to even look at. That leaving just 1 toilet for the whole gym to use. So naturally there was a line and I could not wait for the other two gentlemen to go. So I HAD TO LEAVE.
The workout area itself looked like it had not been swept in god knows how long and the equipment had all sorts of grease drippings and sweat stains.
AS A GYM IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILTY TO PROVIDE A CLEAN ENVIROMENT FOR YOUR MEMBERS. BY NEGLECTING YOIR CLEANING YOU ARE PUTTING YOUR MEMBERS AT RISK FOR SICKNESS LIKE THE FLU, E.COLI, AND STAPH...
