Star Hair Braiding — Local services in Duluth

I do not recommend this shop. I booked my appt two days in advance to end up waiting a whole hour to get started. While I was waiting, the owner, Stella, asked me what color I would be getting and i told her two, but when the actual braider began she used 1b which is darker than my hair color hence why i asked for two. I also was told while i was waiting by Stella that they would speed up the process since i was waiting for so long, but the process definitely was done at normal speed if not longer with just one braider at times who seemed new and was texting and calling on her phone most of the appointment. The style i was getting was mid-back braids with beads. I got there at 10:30, got started at 11:30, and did not leave until 4:45. Mind you I am 4’10 so i’m literally the size of a child. The braider also made the appointment very uncomfortable. To top this horrible experience off the owner, Stella, proceeded to take me outside the salon to pretty much lecture me about not liking the service. In this dragged out conversation she accused me of thinking that they were animals and tried to justify her braider constantly texting and calling during the appointment by saying she has a newborn baby in Jamaica. I understand having a personal life, but it is impossible to text and braid at the same time, so if your personal life is enabling you from doing your job then you shouldn’t be at work. She also told me i shouldn’t be upset about the braids taking long because as a girl i should know not to plan anything the day of my hair appointment. This is the worst experience i’ve ever had in my life with a braiding shop. The one good thing i will say is that the owner was willing to negotiate the price even though i still believe i paid far too much for this for this horrible experience. UPDATE: Not even an hr after posting this review, the owner text me this. The text isn’t even accurate with the fact that i paid 185 not 175. Also threatening someone through religion should never be ok. This further backs up my argument to never book with this salon.

FROM OWNER: You planned to left a bad review before we didn’t even start to do your hair And you wanted us to loose customers so it was your plan already Even after I had a talk to you and even after I gave you a discount??? Even after 3 people was working on your hair ? Even after I tried my best to showed you that we care about our customers and I gave you an option to stay or to go but u choose to stay so you can hurt my business? Small medium midback with 225 but you gave me 175$ and I took it with no problem but u end up hurting my business still ! May God heal you from what you been trough because you don’t have a heart and I will start praying for you even we will never see each other again but just know that God love you I understand that hurt people hurt ! One day you will see things in different perspective !

I was recommended to come here by a friend. First of all, it’s not a shop. It’s the hallway of other suites so you’re scrunched up amongst 5 other stylists with clients in random chairs close up.

I was told to come 7am for my appointment. My hair wasn’t started until 8am. Allegedly, a stylist who was opening forgot the key to the backdoor and had to go back home for it.

Sade did the front of my traditional box braids no issues. Stella did the back. I have soft hair so it requires gel and reinforcement of extra hair where my natural hair ends. Being “stylists” I would think they would know this.

Of course, after I left the shop I noticed my hair was coming thru the braids. I sent a text and was told to come back the next day. I did, with a full pack of hair so redoing the ones that had my hair peeking out was not an issue.

Stella redid the back and I was sure it was done correctly. I WASTED MY TIME GOING BACK. She used even less hair than before even after me telling her REINFORCE WITH EXTRA HAIR AND GEL WHERE MY HAIR ENDS.

I will not be returning and if you have soft hair or want an actual comfortable shop I suggest you find elsewhere. I tried to be nice about this but two things I hate is my time being wasted and my money...

What can I say about Stella and the ladies at Star Hair Braiding that hasn’t been said? These amazing ladies have been braiding and doing my daughter’s hair since Kindergarten, and it’s always been impeccable, but they outdid themselves this time.

My daughter was due to graduate elementary on May 20th. I hit Stella up and she immediately gave me an appointment at 2PM on the day of graduation, which started promptly at 7pm. When I told her that it was for my daughter’s graduation, she told me to drop my daughter off as early as I’d like. So I dropped my daughter at 1pm.

Not only did Stella start on my daughter early, they were done by 5:30PM, which gave us enough time to get home and get ready for the big day. As you can see from the pictures, Stella and her team went above and beyond to make her day special.

If you’re looking for cheap lazy uninspired work, don’t look here. If you’re looking for QUALITY work by people who are passionate about what they do and treat your family like it’s theirs, THIS IS THE SHOP FOR YOU.
