Thara has now altered two gowns for me for two separate weddings. The first one was a wine colored semi-formal gown I purchased from Lulu’s for an October wedding two years ago in Ohio. The dress needed cups sewn in so that I didn’t have to worry about a bra and the length needed to be shortened. She is very professional and takes pride in her work; there were a few other areas that needed some tweaking so that it fit me perfectly and then, of course, pressed. The most recent dress was for a black tie wedding this past Saturday at Nemacolin in western Pennsylvania that I ordered from Macy’s. The black gown needed the length shortened and, initially, I wanted cups sewn in so I didn’t have to wear an uncomfortable strapless bra but when we tried fitting the cups, they didn’t sit well and made my chest look lopsided due to the asymmetrical one shoulder design. Thara explained to me how that happens with that style neckline. The strapless bra was the better choice in this case. Once again, Thara delivered a wonderful service in her ability and talent. I felt beautiful in the dress! She tailored it to fit me well and professionally pressed it. Thara is patient, invested in her quality of work, knowledgable and an expert. Her rates are not comparable to the Pennsylvania Dutch sewing folks of Lancaster county or sewing shops but that is because you are paying for a professional who really knows what she is doing and will do precise and perfect alterations. In other words: you get what you pay for. I have used the “cheaper” sewing shops in Ephrata and the work is just nowhere near my expectations of perfection. It took almost 2 months to NOT have my dress fitted properly. She drew a sketch and wrote down details. These were listed on the contract. I missed an appointment because of not hearing the time, I called them with no answer. I also missed due to the flood. Finally two weeks before the dress was NOT as stated . It did not fit. She pinned the bottom. She never measured my bust line. She indicated I didn’t have a bra on when I came which I did at the initial fitting. Final fitting still not the design stated and it was too long. She insisted the dress fit . It’s too tight and I’m uncomfortable. I asked what did I pay for ? You didn’t fix it and it does not fit ?! We show her the contract and she states I missed appointment. Umm but you didn’t do what you said you would do it does not fit and the wedding is on Sat ! I don’t have time to wait or trust that she’d get this done . When asked again about the contract she acted again like it was my fault. Where’s the sketch and the contract on your end ?! I still paid $8 more dollars and had spent $145 for a dress that does not fit or hemmed enough. She offers to fix it . Nope ! Don’t trust you now … Very unprofessional. Got my wedding dress alterations here. The dress did fit very well, however I had huge issues with the bustle. In between the time of the bustle appointment where my mom learned how to do it to the day of the wedding, for some reason the liner had been attached to the outer part of the dress which we were not told about. We were not taught how to properly bustle it with that attachment. The hook and eyes on the bustle then kept coming unhooked during the dancing portion of my reception and I ended up stepping all over and having to drag the train around everywhere all night. My mom tried a few more times during the evening to bustle it with much difficulty and no success which cost me precious time to enjoy dancing at my wedding reception. I emailed them nearly two months ago to let them know about my issues and to let them know that the technique for bustling on that type of dress needed to be changed so that future brides don’t go through this at their weddings. Never got any kind of response which is even more disappointing. My bridesmaid actually apologized to me for recommending me this seamstress.
