Kennedy Jr., a naval aviator who died in action. He was the son of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and older brother to President John F. Kennedy. This destroyer has circumnavigated the globe šš, sailed through the Panama Canal, seen action and performed in many training exercises. She has served in the blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. She has also served as the afloat recovery team of Gemini 6 & 7. She was built in the Fore River Shipyard at Quincy, Massachusetts. She was launched July 26th, 1945 and commissioned on at Boston December 15th of the same year. Her first š„ shakedown cruise was in the Caribbean on January 4th, 1946. She was decommissioned and stricken from the Navy Register in July 1973. She made her home in Fall River. She later found her acting career in the movie"13 Days" in Rhode Island where she actually made an appearance reprising her role during the Cuban Missile Crisis. She is also home to the Admiral Arleigh Burke National Destroyermen's Museum. Exploring all of the vessels was an adventure, especially if you enjoy learning about history.
