Absolutely love visiting Big Mamie. Touring a unique piece of history is always a treat. Although, I was a bit concerned with the state of the ship when I visited. The teak decking is in very poor condition, and has been "repaired" using cement in a few areas. Many areas of the ship are closed off and full of various construction apparatus and minutiae, such as the pile of computer equipment in the Scullery. As it was pouring rain, I didn't get to spend much time above deck, and the teak deterioration was made much more apparent, with many areas feeling soft and sponge-like. Donor dollars go a long way to helping keep these historical ships in top condition for generations to enjoy and learn from. I encourage anyone who is able to contribute whatever you can to help maintain BB-59, so that grandchildren and great-grandchildren of today's generation can learn about the greatest generation. I was a C+ Student in high school, but have found myself to be a huge history buff today 25 years after graduating. This ship holds a very special place in my heart, as I did overnights in Boy Scouts when I was in my youth. The smell onboard brought me right back to those adventurous evenings. I highly recommend everyone tour this ship (and the Lionfish, and JPK, and the PT Boats, and the new Vietnam Air Cav display) at least once. You'll be drawn back time...
Read moreThe Fall River Massachusetts Battleship Cove and the USS Massachusetts BB-59 is a very impactful place to visit. The history, stories, and guided tours are absolutely amazing and quite beautiful. There is also a few other war time marine crafts such as a Soviet Union submarine, and a long with the battleship there is also either a frigate or Corvette class ship as well. Furthermore there is also a retired Apache helicopter on display with a very very cool sharp toothed smile like a shark. Battleship cove in the USS Massachusetts is definitely a must-see and a great place to visit for people of all ages. Living in Fall I highly recommend checking it out! There is also a huge boardwalk to walk that spans the coast and leads you to Bicentennial Park with a new WW2 memorial wall and many other war memorials. I hope you take my advice and check out these places you will be happy you did. Lastly there is a very old and very nice carousel for children and adults that is right in the front of the property that has immense history and provides...
Read moreWe toured her and the DD-850, USS Joseph P Kennedy Jr. destroyer. Both are being actively worked on but need our support. Massachusetts is huge, and your self guided tour takes you almost everywhere. We had lunch aboard, which certainly wasn't fancy, but was quite palatable and reasonable under the circumstances. Warning: below decks can be down right hot in the summertime. I would avoid summer visits.
The Kennedy is included in the price and has an amazing history as well. For me the fact that it was the ship that retrieved the Gemini and Apolo crews and capsules gave me goose bumps. The other two vesels are not available to visit at this time. There are also PT boat and helicopter displays that are worth your time.
We were there at opening and kept busy until about 14:00 hours. The unckuded museum up the road is fairly ho-hum but worth the stroll.
Pro tip: stop at Troy City Brewing for a drink when you are...
