What to say. Decades is a churn, spitting out a mid century inspired look. This place has been operating for 21 years and I’ve been a customer there for 15 of them on and off. It’s luck of the draw at best most days, with fab things mixed with Ikea castoffs, and Home Goods orphans. Still they do get in some great things, which fly out the door as soon as they hit the floor. But try to sell something or consign… it doesn’t matter what you have. I’ve consigned many things there over the years as I change my decor from time to time and all my stuff has sold almost immediately with few exceptions. But I got very little for them as an Ikea chair is worth the same as Adrian Pearsall in this shop, according to the owners logic , which changes as fast as his mood. Still I suppose selling things for something is better than donating them.. I can donate to a local thrift and chances are it would end up in Decades anyway. Decades has a pricing system designed to maximize turnover and they freely admit their knowledge of mid century modern items is limited. Doesn’t matter. The place is a churn and customers are a churn and consignors are a churn. Their pickers too. One owner has a propensity to be either aloof or intensely friendly, schmoozy really.. like a car salesman. If you find something here you have to have..hammer him for a better price. He can do it. He pays next nothing for his stock, and if it’s a consignors, what does he care? He paid nothing for it. Now there is something of note.. when you go do go upstairs to the “White Elephants Graveyard”. It’s like where MCM furniture goes to die. You’ll find pieces in need of work but a good bargain can be had if you sift among the carcasses up there. But don’t panic. Most things take months to sell once relegated to the “ graveyard “ Why they had a Guzzini arc floor lamp languishing up there for 3 years!
Market Pulse FACT Mid-century modern is drying up. Most boomers have already relinquished their parents MCM households and now most of the choice stuff is already in the hands of the collectors. Even things from the 80s ( now a hot look ) are on the wane. So dealers take note.. your sources are shifting. Soon you’ll have to rely on collectors dying off or getting tired of their things and seeking change. So treat us better. You’ll come to...
Read moreHave been and bought many times, but one day I walked in and was surprised to see an original oil painting by my Ex hanging on the wall. I had donated it to Out of the Closet a month or two before. It was an abstract, hanging horizontally but was painted vertically. All this is fine, I think...I mean they need to get their merch somewhere. The part that bothered me is that the gentleman working in the store that day proceeded to tell me the painting was by a local artist who moved up from Key West, who previously was focused on tropical painting but has since started painting abstracts. Of course, none of this was further from the truth. I've not...
