Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes — Local services in Fort Scott

This was such a meaningful experience for me and my students! The space is really thoughtfully curated, and the featured stories were enthralling. Norm talked to us about the museum and a few of the stories before we walked around, and he was a great speaker and really held everyone's attention well, which is hard with a group of high schoolers. Our group was split in two, and the tour guide for the group I went with, Ty, was really engaging, at ease with the students, and an excellent storyteller! The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes gives visitors incredible illustrations of individuals from history that may not have been celebrated but have made an indelible impact on society around the world. These project presentations are world-class, so it's even more impressive to realize they were done by students from around the world! Some of these impactful stories can illicit strong emotions. Add to this a Fort Scott historic downtown district with brick streets, quaint boutiques, and a variety of restaurants...great place to spend time. Did I mention it's free...

We were pleased to find it open on a Saturday afternoon. (It seems like most small museums around here are only open when most people are working.) We were greeted by a lady upon entering who asked if we'd like her to share a little bit about how the museum got started. She did a wonderful job of telling us about the Irena Sandler story.
