i had taken pottery classes with a number of different teachers in the past, and still struggled with “pulling” beyond 4 inches high and not having massively thick walls at the bottoms amongst other little demons. After a very long hiatus i decided to get back to pottery and set up a home space with all but a kiln. I watched many hours of youtube tutorials and after tackling what i could by practicing at home, i went to Hannah and Roberto at their Elkhorn Pottery Studio to work out some more kinks and tackle my handle, or as in my case “mangle” making and trimming (which i had i loathed). i enrolled in a 4 week session alongside newcomers to pottery. Hannah and Roberto have incredible teaching skills to assist students at any level. I quickly started to grasp and enjoy the trimming and the handle making processes, my throwing has improved considerably, and I garnered more efficient and environmentally friendly ways to clean up and organize my home space. An unexpected plus was the introduction to a different clay versus the three clays I had been using for different glazing techniques, which I will now be using exclusively. Hannah and Roberto have selected a perfect variety of glazes to chose from and know the best combinations to provide students and studio members with beautiful and consistent results. Because i have a home set-up, i continue to enroll in the weekly student classes instead of the 24-7 studio membership. This forces me to set aside the time to learn (an unending endeavor in ceramics) and commit to being much more productive while experimenting. I throw pieces during the classes on my own bats and take them home to tidy up a little more on my wheel, wire off, trim, apply handles and embellishments, and bring them back into the studio for the firings and glazing (sometimes i use other commercial glazes i have at home that work well with their clay too). Hannah and Roberto are incredibly flexible and accessible, and i feel welcomed into their community. Elkhorn Studio is in a convenient and safe location (literally around the corner from the courthouse) with its own parking lot, and you will get to meet “Atlas” the best and cutest studio...
Read moreI'm currently taking my second 4-week class (with a friend this time!) at Elkhorn because it was such a wonderful experience the first time I was here! Hannah and Roberto are phenomenal instructors who are engaged and present during each class, helping each student as necessary/desired, and always quick to provide tips and encouragement. I'm already amazed at how much more comfortable I am with throwing thanks to their wealth of knowledge, willingness to provide support, and unfailing kindness- and this is coming from someone is is usually very uncomfortable with activities which require creativity! I truly can't recommend this studio enough, and plan to bring more friends around in the future to share the joys of throwing...
Read moreI recently took a class at Elkhorn Pottery, and I can confidently say that it was one of the best experiences I've had in a long time. Hannah and Roberto have made a warm and inviting atmosphere. They are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they went out of their way to make sure I felt comfortable even when I'm super discouraged. Whether you're a seasoned potter or a beginner like me, there's something for everyone. They took the time to explain the process, offer tips and guidance, and answer any questions I had. I felt like I was in good hands throughout the...
