I rarely write a negative review. I am also a life-long Glen Ellyn resident whose family has spent thousands of dollars in this store over the course of many years.

I should first at least give them credit for consistency. I have yet to walk into the store without the employees looking at me like I just ruined their day (the same is true when my wife walks in). If I do need to ask a question, they often look me up and down before providing a rude and condescending response. Why are they always like that? I am a polite person, I smile, and I value other people's time. I've worked in retail stores and remember how much I appreciated the polite and patient customers. Yet, here, it has no meaning. Customers are viewed as an annoyance. But that’s nothing new. The reason I am writing this now is because they have hit a low beyond anything I could have imagined.

I gave my daughter money to buy her mom a Christmas present. She bought her a bracelet and took it with her to Michigan where we were going to be spending Christmas. Once there, she realized she had mistakenly bought a children's size and felt badly. I was still in Illinois, so I went to the store and bought the adult version (and, yes, they were as rude as ever). After Christmas, I went back to the store to return the original bracelet. It had been 8 days since my daughter purchased it. It was at that time I was informed there are no returns after 7 days - only exchanges. I politely explained what had happened. I explained that I could have waited and exchanged the smaller bracelet for the larger bracelet AFTER Christmas, but I wanted my daughter to be able to give her mom the right-sized bracelet as a Christmas present. It didn't matter though. When I brought back the original bracelet, I was told no returns and no exceptions. I politely asked if there was someone I could talk with. I was told the owner would be in tomorrow. So I came back the next day. It was during a snowstorm, I waited for 3 trains to cross, and then I "just missed her". I was invited to come back a third day.

In the end, three days, and a couple dozen dirty looks later, they refunded the $40 for the first bracelet. It is important to note that I do not hold any of the employees accountable for their behavior because the OWNER does not hold them accountable. A toxic culture exists within that store and shame on the owner for considering it acceptable. And shame on me for knowing this, yet continuing to support this store for all of these years. However, I will never set foot in that store again and I caution...

If I could give this place less than 1 star I would. It is a cute store with a lot of different ideas for kids. However the staff is awful. I came in looking for no slip bows for my daughter and they looked at me like I had asked a crazy question (they carry the brand wee ones which are the only ones I can find) then the lady goes well I've never heard of what you are asking so I don't know and there was another lady behind the counter that said well fine hair doesn't hold bows and we have ones that will. I said ok can you show them to me. She proceeded to stay behind the counter along with four other people for only one other customer. She never came to show me the clips they had so I left. I will never go back nor give my money to a store that seems to have an air about themselves and instead of asking questions to help they act affronted that you...

M & Em's has been my "go to" store for many years. Whenever I'm looking for a unique gift for a baby, child or friend this is where I go! M & Em's never disappoints with its fun, fresh style and awesome staff. They always help me put together great gifts and even beautifully wrap them. Over the years I have bought my children the cutest outfits and really unique toys. Most recently, I've started shopping for myself there too. I always find adorable tops, dresses, skirts and really anything that's the latest style for the season. I can never resist the jewelry because it is AMAZING!
