I love Meijer so much. I do the vast majority of my grocery shopping here, because it's often less expensive than Kroger for the exact same product (just two weeks ago, I noticed that the same brand of coffee was $3.00 more expensive at Kroger for the same size bag--ridiculous). The store is often quite busy, but it's easy enough to find a parking spot within ten or so spots from the side of the building. The store is clean, bright, and roomy in appearance (they are also undergoing some aesthetic upgrades right now in the freezer section). I go for groceries the most, but I have also bought gardening plants/supplies, electronics, clothes, and housewares here, all of which worked out well. I should also note that I prefer store brands to name brands, and have tried just about every store brand that exists in the tri-state. Meijer brand is by far the best. For example, their frozen vegetables are delicious and fresh. I love Meijer peas and green beans to the point I refuse to buy name brands because they aren't as good; on the contrary, Kroger's name brand frozen vegetables are dull and flavorless. (Kroger DOES have some up and coming store brands, like Private Selection and Simple Truth, that impressed me, but these are pricey.)
I should note that mPerks--Meijer's rewards program--is the best rewards program I belong to out of dozens. It includes digital coupons (found on the app or on the website, where you can clip while planning your grocery list or while at the store), rewards (get $3.00 off after spending $_ on _ brand, for example; this includes pharmacy rewards), your old receipts for reference and use, store sale ads, etc. This is leagues better than Kroger's app and program (it's impossible for me to find ALL clippable coupons on Kroger's app, and it refused to take my phone number as an alternative ID and insisted on creating a new Kroger Plus card even though I already had one). MPerks just WORKS, and it's so convenient to do everything you need to in preparation for a grocery trip.
There is only one way I can see in which Meijer can improve, particularly when it comes to comparing them to Kroger. Healthy food options. Meijer has a lot of food options for people with special diets or allergens (they have an entire Gluten-Free section, which is helpful for my husband who has Celiac Disease), but there are some things oddly missing. For example: they have vegan-friendly butter, milk, cheese, and cream cheese, but are missing vegan sour cream, which we have to go to Kroger for. It's the little things like that which are most irritating, because they are so close to being a one-stop shop, but there are things I have to go to Kroger for. For the vast majority of consumers who have no diet restrictions, this will be no issue.
I am so glad to have Meijer because Kroger has repeatedly disappointed me in many respects and I would hate going there as my regular grocery store. Last thing: Meijer's employees are usually super friendly and helpful, to the point where I have gotten to know some of their names and they're always happy to see me. You have the occasional employee who is more introverted and quiet, which is fine and to be expected, of course, but I have yet to see an outright rude or dismissive employee in 15+ years of going here. I highly recommend this store for anyone looking to get great deals...
Read moreI wanted to give a kind word about an employee working the registers this morning at around 7:30. I’m sorry for not remembering her name but she had gray hair and an accent. I was doing some last minute Christmas shopping because I forgot about a few people (oops). When I got to the register, I had all kinds of awkwardly shaped items and a willow angel figurine that did not have a tag because it wasn’t in a box. But she was able to ring up the item from a picture I took of the item’s sales tag on the shelf. There was an issue with the credit card reader being slow and not processing the sale, but she didn’t get frustrated. A man in line behind me was being openly rude to me, telling the person he was with that “of course her card doesn’t work”. I was doing my best to ignore him despite him huffing and puffing and rolling his eyes at me. I’m assuming he thought my card declined and that it wasn’t just an issue with the card reader. On top of that, one of the gift cards I was purchasing wasn’t ringing up for some reason. Honestly, if the cashier had not been so kind and calm, I probably would’ve been more inclined to be upset at this man but I figured if she wasn’t bothered, neither was I. I shop at this Meijer regularly but I almost always go through self checkout since don’t normally get many groceries (single with no children). I know this time of year can be hard on retail workers and the fact that she handled a stressful situation with grace and kindness was a testimony of her good character. Even after all that, she still smiled and told me merry Christmas as I was leaving.
I grew up in Middletown, OH and moved to Cincinnati this past summer and was so excited to live close to a Meijer since I was always loyal to the store on Towne Blvd up north. Idk how Meijer does it but the employees, quality and everything about this chain have been impressing me since I was a little girl shopping with my mom and begging to ride the...
Read moreDO NOT SHOP HERE. I used to shop here all the time. Literally, all the time. It was my go-to store for anything I needed, ever. I spent hundreds of dollars there every month. All that changed one new years eve, when I went to return a product and instead almost went to jail. The product had been bought the night before and was disgustingly used when we opened the box. The product was over $100, so obviously I'm returning it (this was also in the middle of Covid, and I've only ever returned one or two items to this store in my whole life)...so the next day, we go to return it, and are met with an incredibly rude staff. Long story short, the first staff member processed the return, but because it was over $100, other staff members had to be called over....by the time I should've been getting my money back, I was being accused of being a criminal. I try to logically explain that something obviously wasn't right, and suggested checking the time stamp to see when it was marked as "returned" (that would've been very easy to clear up cuz it was obvious what happened) but they refused and made it into a whole scene, and said they called the cops. The manager later called to fix the situation, and said they checked their security stuff and everything...saying the staff was wrong and explained exactly what happened, which was exactly what I thought had happened....and he sent some Meijer gift cards and said sorry a thousand times...but honestly, I no longer shop there. I have never felt so humiliated, ganged up on, and wrongly accused in my life.
Obviously not worth it - go to Kroger for groceries and Walmart for everything else....or at bare minimum, go to the Colerain Meijer. Avoid this one at all cost because any normal ol' day in Meijer could turn into you being a falsely...
