As dysfunctional as the cesspool of hempstead texas is, this store gets a C. It's old. It's too expensive, the employees are way underpaid making below the minimum cost of living and are probably overworked as well. The owners must be stuck in the year 1982 because that's the vibe I get when I walk through the fancy automatic sliding doors. It takes me back in time. The aroma of old market smell hits you and you're reminded by your bad childhood. The wine selection is basic. Could do better. Could renovate the dump as well. I'm usually met with some lard hillbilly or spanish lady with 13 screaming kids at the basket coral where I lose all my dignity and self worth and start shoving the wobbly wheel cart thoughout the store. The veggies have no appeal. There's not a whole lot to chose from and the dairy area smells like a nasty yeast infection from a unhygienic thunder beasts. The music played is awful. The atmosphere is extremely depressing. I. Truly surprised however that they don't lock up the steaks. ( Not that there are any good tomahawk steaks or porter house to choose from.) They also do not have a deli or bakery. You could clean that old building with industrial strength cleaner twelve times and THAT smell still lingers. It just feels like the owners are very greedy and do not care about their employees or ever renovating the place. There's always some crabby disgruntled old lady running the courtesy booth who gets an F at customer service. The only decent employee I fully trust and respect is Lindsey. She's always kind caring smiling and helpful. I hope to God y'all are paying her atleast $26 an HR. Because that's the amt of hourly pay it takes to afford rent and be able to rent the crummiest apartments at $900 a month. They ask u make three times that to qualify. I'm gonna go back to shopping at Kroger and avoiding that place ain't because I know all the employees deserve so much more than they are paid. There's like no signs of a public bathroom so if I ever have to go, the coke isle shall suffice as my potty area. Also like ten years ago they kicked me out for bringing a cat I found inside the store. Another compliant I have is the yogurt selection is awful. Blue bell ice cream has too much space that could be used for new Orleans ice cream co ice cream flavors that are WAY better and cheaper. Also there's no app to order online with as well. The 1980s sucked. Please stop being a greedy business owner and pay better asap. Or when I get my settlement, and open my own business I am going to take a couple of your employees and pay them a liveable wage, give them health insurance that's worth a f and give quarterly bonuses and have a modern hi tech store and resturaunt. I will pay lindsey n the guy cashier( I forgot his name ) a minimum of $28 an HR. U too can afford it. Also for safety reasons please light the parking lot at night better. Those stupid cops across the street cannot be everywhere to save people from your negligence. I pay with real money too btw not food stamps. So please stop price gouging just because we're in the ghetto. Be a good boss/ owner. Offer employees raises too. Well back to Kroger I go, the rona is over with and that's about the only positive thing I have experienced with arlans. Pa that customer who owns this bicycle, is a...
Read moreHaven't visited this location in quite some time, and was very surprised at the changes! Signs state that the store is under new ownership, and I have to compliment the new owners on their changes. The store was immaculate, I have never seen it cleaner or more well stocked, it looked great! There were lots of staff and they were very attentive and friendly, asking if I needed help with finding items and just super nice. There were also deals all over the store, saving me lots of money, especially when compared to the other local grocery store, whose prices are actually outrageous. If you're a local to Hempstead and haven't shopped here in a while, I recommend going back and giving them a try. And, if you're just passing through Hempstead while travelling Hwy 290, this store is not far off and will save you time, with very quick cashier's, and spending less than you would at some of the arrival destination stores. Also, this store has been around a long time and it's nice to support such a well...
Read moreWe visit the Hempstead area twice a year on vacation to operate our fireworks stand. Our first stop in town is to Arlan's for supplies. A wonderful little home-town grocery, Arlan's has a good selection of produce, pantry items, paper goods and frozen foods. But what really stands out is their meat specials. I always find good low prices on top quality meats while we are in town.
A large parking area and convenient location makes Arlan's a wonderful place for quick in and out trips as well as those dreaded extended-stay engagements. The staff is helpful and friendly and we are greeted each season by the same smiling faces. Problems are solved without hassle and customer service is wonderful.
We look forward to visiting Arlan's every season and would highly recommend this little grocery to local residents and travelers alike. Thanks to Arlan's for making us feel welcome each and every time...
