Getting Fish n' Chips in different places is kinda my thing. So when I saw the sign outside Barley's that said $8.99 Fish n' Chips Wednesdays I went the next Wed. I got there last night(2/17/21) at 8:53pm. The very nice young woman in the cafe said the cafe closes at 9, and if it's ok with me I could order from a table in the bar - which was perfect. She informed the bar server and seated me. Several minutes later I was able to order - even though there were only 3 other customers in the bar who were not eating. A 32oz beer and the Fisherman's Platter(fish/chips/shrimp) for $15.49 is a very good deal, and it was great! When it was time to pay I handed the server my debit card and she asked for my ID. I handed her my ID and she said I couldn't use the card(It's a business card that doesn't have my name on it). So I gave her my personal debit card to try. Only problem is I usually keep next to nothing in my personal account, and it got declined. So I asked if they could just run the business card as a debit so I would have to enter the pin. I guess it was a nope because she walked away(never to be seen again). So I hopped on my phone to transfer some money into my personal account. Less than a minute later both security guards walk up to me, and the guy asks me how I'm doing tonight. WOW!?! Without looking up I said "Well I was great. Now I'm just transferring some money to my personal card." He said "ok" and they walked away. A minute later, under Very close surveillance by security I walk up to the bar and ask to pay because even though my beer is only half gone I just want to get out since I'm now an assumed criminal. Bartender asks for ID, she charges my personal card, and I leave a 23% tip. I can't comprehend why the server didn't just ask if I have another form of payment, or even let me offer one? She just went straight to security and said God knows what. I was just a clean cut, conservatively dressed, middle aged, middle class, soft spoken, respectful, happy, sober dude having fish n' chips and a beer who's rarely used personal bank account only had $9 in it at that specific moment. I have nothing against any of these people. The guards did a very good job with the info they were given(I assume). Hopefully the server is just new??? The worst thing is I really like the place and want to go back; but feel like everyone there will think ill of me:[ Hopefully they watch the tapes and get a good laugh out of it. When I get back in there you owe me half a huge beer Barleys! Don't worry I'll bring cash and change the...
Read moreThe slots are loose enough on the weekdays, but on the weekends it's almost like this casino goes by the old rules of tourism! Furthermore the employees, especially the night security could most definitely benefit from some sort of kindness counseling or maybe even a course in proper business etiquette. In 13 years I have rarely experienced a situation such as this, but it seems it is more common than I was privey to. It was later in the evening, twords the end of the week. I was there with my husband. We had eaten a nice meal at the restaurant, then we went to play our usual free play & we had another $50 each for whatever.Well I had already spent $30 of my $50 when I decided to freshen up a bit so I went to use the restroom.Upon leaving the restroom I was approached by a security officer and asked for my 🆔.When I asked why was it now being requested as I was leaving the restroom and not while I was playing the guy commented very rudely"that I had not been playing the machines,as a matter of fact he was sure I wouldn't even have been able to afford a bottle of water from this establishment,"!Those weren't his exact words but none the less he was apparently insinuating I was a vagrant or worse. Naturally I retaliated!Just as I usually would in these situations. So of course it escalated to the point of my being kicked out!Now my husband & I have lived in the area for nearly 13-15 years. He & his father lived within blocks of where we live for 5-7 years prior to that. His mother, brother & several family members have come from Alaska on several occasions for visits. My mother and 4 of my 6 siblings have all come from out of town for visits all on separate occasions, all of which we brought to Barleys to get a small taste of the gambling scene or to the restaurant for a bite, or for specific sports events for the benefit of the big screens and the fact that there's more than 1 of them. It's sad to admit that will no longer be happening. I was treated with such disrespect that my husband had half a mind to involve our lawyer, (mostly because I am a disabled 44 year old woman of smaller stature and it was late at night and I was forced outside alone with no way of contacting him,)none the less we have not simply because us taking away the benefits of our money from this establishment is...
Read moreUpdate December 2024:
I came in here on my last day of a trip in December 2024 and things have changed.
They've replaced the machines at the bar, which is fine, but they've got a new quality about them that would make me stop gambling entirely if it becomes universal -- pop-up ads in the game.
They seem to have stopped making their own beer. I guess somebody got sick or died from some cleaning fluid in the tap lines a while ago. They still have draft beer, so if the issue was dirty tap lines, I don't know why the type of beer flowing through them would matter.
The bartender on this visit had a real "Ahkshually" air about him. My buddy and I have been playing video poker longer than he's been alive, and he felt it necessary to repeatedly interject our conversations with the pomposity of those old guys on YouTube who still have their vinyl collection of obscure bands from 1973.
Food is still great. I really enjoyed the steak and eggs breakfast.
I did take a nice $250 win on one of the new games, so I can't complain THAT much, but I got really uncomfortable in there and repeatedly told my friend under my breath that I needed to get out and get out now.
This experience is likely going to remove Barley's from my regular rotation.
Original review: I don't live anywhere near Vegas. Or Nevada. Or the Pacific time zone.
But every time I go to Vegas, about twice a year, Barley's is a must stop.
I've never had anything but amazing bartenders. On all but one occasion, the food has been excellent and affordable. The one time the food came out not so great, the staff remedied it immediately and without question.
Bonus, I don't know what it is about this place, but the video poker here has repeatedly been very very kind to me. I can't really rate a place on that as random chance is random chance, but it sure doesn't hurt that I've walked out with a fatter wallet a few times!
They do always have progressive on the royals, so that's a nice little something extra if you can...
