Herhsey Cycles and the owner Derek are exceptionally good, and I would highly recommend Hershey Cycles as your new go-to local bike shop in Dauphin County!
The service exceeded my expectations, and as a former competitive cyclist and triathlete, I have high standards for repairs. Here is what made Hershey Cycles stand out compared to other LBS's in the area:
They are honest and do quality work. The owner addressed my walk-in tire repair need on the same day, and he not only refused an upsell me but generously comped the repair. Another LBS I previously took a bike to for a tune-up removed an almost brand new part and then charged me for it's replacement when it was not anywhere near worn out and had 3-4,000 miles of life left. Not Derek, he has been trustworthy and is not trying to swindle cyclists by adding on unneccesary repairs to make a fast buck.
Friendly and caring, your bike will not just be another number or quick-fix to push out the door. The staff at Hershey Cycles seem to care about their patrons and take a personal interest in fixing and setting up bikes that people love to ride. It's nice to see people who aren't burnt out and do things right because they value seeing customers enjoy their rides.
Fair prices! I already mentioned that the owner did not try to upsell me on a repair, and when I asked about other maintenence like tune ups, wheels being trued, and advanced repairs, the quotes they gave me were generously fair. Other shops charge excessive prices for components and labor, and I understand people have to make a living, but Herhsey Cycles is honest in charging a reasonable and lower price for quality repairs.
Fun - you can tell they are passionate and knowledgeable about cycles and bike culture, and it was refreshing to know that your mechanic might love your bike or know it better than you do as a cyclist. The shop gives off good vibes right and left, and it was definitely a positive experience!
It all goes to say that you can't go wrong in purchasing or getting repairs done at Hershey Cycles because they are honest people who charge fair prices for quality repairs. All in all, I would trust them as much with my high-end triathlon bike as I would with my wife's...
Read moreAs a first time customer, I brought in my road bicycle to Hershey Cycles after returning from a ride during which my rear cassette derailleur and shifting got sticky and sluggish. Derek quickly diagnosed the issue as a frayed/shredded cable in the shifter mechanism and installed a new cable overnight. I am very happy with the quality of the service, quick repair, and price for the job (a simple repair/install for the cable that other shops might have charged more for). Don't let the laid-back atmosphere or small shop size fool you, Derek has the skills, knowledge, and passion for cycling. Just as important, Derek is transparent about his work and enjoys teaching about bicycle parts, systems, and repair.- Pete
