I've been in several types of gyms from Federal Building gyms to Military installation gyms, to Bally, L.A. Fitness, and used to drop the ex-wife off at Lady Fitness. Additionally, used to belong to a hole-in-the-wall gym owned by a professional bodybuilder. So Inknow a tad about gyms and how to compare to them to others.
It's a co-ed gym, it's new, management is loose and often the attendants are busy joking around when you come in. They scan you in indeed, so no non-members sneaking in. They have a scale available for use. They have a smoothie bar. An abs-section with mats on the ground in front of a mirror, and a large wooden court where they have Zumba classes as well as boxing bags. Racquetball courses in the back and several elliptical and treadmills. Same-sex saunas accessed through the latrines as well as showers.
Yes, the pool is open to both the inside of the gym and the outside (non-members). I think the reason for this is obviously to sell gym memberships. Problem is, as someone else stated, if you're an average person, you're going to the gym to work out and look good (read: you're self-concious about your body). In addition, the open court (Zumba, punching bags) is also open to the public.
I have heard some of the employees themselves mention how much they have the politics of the place and due to the lack of resources (time AND money), they cannot repair sinks and lightbulbs as fast as they would like. The dance classes are BEYOND packed. I mean I have seen sardines packed less tight than some of these classes. In the male's latrine, you will see toilet paper on the ground, urine all over the seats, and sometimes 1 or more sinks do not work. I don't think the gym can simply keep up with the volume of people that visit this place.
The peak hours are usually between 5pm to just over 7pm on Mon-Fri. I have Sundays off so cannot comment and traffic kinda picks up on Saturdays around or just after 1pm, but by no means is it anywhere near the post-work rush. I have seen some traffic in the weekday mornings, but not as bad as the post-work rush either. Lots of people mention the hours are short and in general that is true. They usually start closing half an hour before they actually close, so you will notice people going around vaccuming and shutting off lights in the middle of your workout.
The equipment is nice, but overall is starting to show signs of wear and tear. The loaner boxing gloves are all completely destroyed (bring your own) and you will indeed see perverts, creeps, weirdos, and teenie boppers going to the gym trying to find someone to hook up with and not working out. However, you will also see the standard guy like me trying to release stress, the elderly going for a leisurely treadmill walk, and some of their own employees use the place before their shift. So it's not all beautiful people using the gym.
I recommend the place and even though the money they pump into it isn't the best, it's still a nice location in a heavily-populated shopping...
Read moreI am an LA fitness member for over a year now, my daughter was a member for 6 months, and my son has been a member for almost a year now. I had the personal training option for over a year now. When I signed the contract for personal training, i was supposed to get a direct class every week, this never happened. All of my classes were done in a group with other members of the personal training. The time that I made a complaint about this, they told me they were doing me a "favor" as they then told me that the price I was paying was "too low". I have always been disappointed and unhappy with the service. The manager Miguel was nasty, uneducated, rude and treated me like garbage. I froze my membership because I was going to get a surgery, yet they still charged me the full price, causing an overdraft in my bank account. My surgery was delayed, and I decided to continue going, because they had charged me anyway. And about my personal training, I had made a down grade because I had finished my training contract and I wasn't going to be able to go for a month or more, and did this in order to not pay the full price. When I spoke to the manager Miguel about all of this, he called me a liar, and I felt robbed and humiliated. He told me I had to get out of the gym, and because my account was going to be frozen, and they were going to give me my money back, he kicked me out. He made me feel embarrassed and like a lesser human being, especially with the fact that he was almost yelling at me, with all the other people around, and I had to contain and hold in my tears. I am extremely unsatisfied with the services I have been given, and the mistreatment that I did not deserve. The manager has no people skills, and is extremely disrespectful, and I...
