Birnn Chocolates — Local services in Highland Park

The Phoenix rises once again! More than a decade ago I was a loyal patron for home, office and holiday treats. Over time Birnn's offerings grew limited and the demographic I filled was no longer welcome. My grandchildren are older, now, and I thought I'd surprise them with old fashioned hollow dark chocolate decorated Easter Eggs as I remembered them as a child: large dark chocolate eggs with a light chocolate decorative ribbon stuffed with more chocolates inside. I searched until Birnn appeared. Wow, not quite the dark chocolate with contrasting chocolate ribbon, but darn close. I ordered 3 and to my delight got a call from "Diane," who offered to save me shipping and drop them herself. Where in the world today would you find such a gracious and generous offer? And it wasn't even in response to a request made by me. The offer was spontaneous from Birnn! She did what she said she would, but most significantly and what prompts me to write this review is what my grandchildren texted. They usually say, "Thank you," but these eggs put big thanks and glee into their "Thank yous," thrilling with my choice. I see Birrn again offers high end dark chocolates I crave and love to gift. I'm hoping Birnn will add the joy of old fashioned hot fudge sauce ala what was once Grunings hot fudge. You can't find true chewy hot fudge sauce the way Grunings did it. In fact, to this day, you find Grunings hot fudge aficionados online yet searching for the Holy Grail of hot fudge. If you've never savored that ethereal combination of dark chewy hot fudge over vanilla ice cream, try Mother Myrick's in Manchester, Vermont, or Enjou, in Morristown. This is a neat little chocolate shop tucked back behind a neighborhood in what I would call an industrial area. The showroom is plain and sterile but the staff are friendly. The chocolates are well presented but honestly a bit too rich for both me and my wife. The fruit fillings are a smooth flavored chocolate creme, I would prefer to remove the chocolate base and be more fruit. Always fresh and the most delicious truly homemade chocolate. I used to work around the corner within walking distance and could stop in for a quick treat. The owner and staff are wonderfully kind and helpful. Very clean. Well presented. Delectable combinations!
