Columbia Factory Store — Local services in Hilton Head Island

My girlfriend and I arrived at the store shortly after they opened on Friday 8/29. I needed a rain jacket for the weekend since I forgot to pack mine. Upon checking out, My girlfriend told the cashier that she was a teacher so she could get the teacher discount. Upon showing the cashier a recent paystub in an email from her district office, the cashier began raising her voice and was very rude to my girlfriend over not having a true “school ID”, which she left at home because we are on vacation. The (what appeared to be) manager said the pay stub was acceptable since it is shown on the email that it Is from the district.

We both understand that you need to verify employment to receive the discount. We were just very appalled by the VERY rude tone of the cashier. Upon showing the paystub the cashier said “what am I looking at?! Do you have a form of government ID?!”

We won’t be back, I hope other teachers see this and don’t have the same...

So, they are still using magnetic stripe technology for their credit card readers, even though the EMV standard and associated responsibilities came through in October of 2015. The stripe on my card is not the best and they had no way to read the chip and refused to do a manual number input with a card imprint. Disappointing customer service. I am here, at the register, after waiting in line for 15 minutes, to give you my money, and you tell me you can't take it. Time to update...
