Taney County Surplus seems to be somewhat of a combination discount store and thrift shop.
The store is essentially divided into three sections. In the front part, there is a small area containing some kitchen utensils, house wares, cook books, OTC meds, and other items. The majority of the front area houses a variety of food items including pasta/rice, salad dressings and condiments, canned goods, and beverages. A limited amount of fresh produce, and a pretty broad assortment of snacks are available as well.
The rear of the store has multiple freezers with a good variety of meats (hamburger, chicken breast, bacon, sausage, etc.), and a selection of family sized prepared meals. There are a few other random items here as well.
Prices vary greatly... as does the selection of items for sale. Some items are deeply discounted (usually because they are at or beyond their recommended "use by" dates), and other prices are about what you would see at Walmart. The frozen meat definitely is the best bargain in my opinion.
You should check "use by" dates... many items are expired by anywhere from a few weeks to several months. I purchased several items that were a few weeks (and in one case 4 months) beyond the "use by" dates, but none were spoiled or unusable.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Other reviews indicated the store was dirty/disorganized, but that was not the case on my visit. I would say it is worth at least one trip to TCS to see if any bargains are available for your...
Read moreI visited here 3 weeks ago, for the second time. The first time I stopped in I bought some baking supplies like chocolate chips and candy and ended up having to throw it all out because the chocolate was old and bad. I decided to give it another try a few weeks back and I paid very close attention to expiration dates and only bought items still good. I was delighted to find kraft cheese blocks in the refrigerator section still in date. So I gave them a good look over and bought 4. When I got home and opened one, it was covered in mold under the label. While that's not a huge deal for hard cheeses, what that tells me is somewhere down the supply chain someone is leaving refrigerated goods out in room temps long enough to cause mold. I don't live super close so I just got rid of the cheese and again threw out items I got from this place for the second time. Today I happen to see a Facebook post from here advertising freezer goods that are easy 35% marked up from Wal-Mart prices. I left a comment saying so and my comment was immediately deleted. SHADY. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS PLACE. THEY DO NOT HAVE PROPER FOOD HANDLING. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. WALMART IS DEFINITELY CHEAPER AND YOU WON'T WASTE MONEY ON SPOILED FOOD. Anything marked down for a deal is likely expired...

It must be refrigerated or it may get too old in a week,or more. Summer time must be in fridge...winter not really necessary. I've also, found great deals on special,Manuka honey and others from Australia. I find a bit of everything that we use at damaged freight...its very well stocked up. I buy items that are good ..as in a best yet standard...and many times dated later in the year. Damaged also, has non dateable goods...auto products, hardware, lightbulb s, then it has pans and kitchen, items. It also handles mailed items to people who never got their goods, aka items that were salvageable They also have frozen foods that are good, and canned goods, jarred goods, laundry and personal, products. Candy, and seasonal, items like the, thermal, underwear I bought today, the special socks, and a fine winter earred pullover hat, at quite the discount. So. Go...
