This art school provides learning opportunities for students of all ages. My 5year-old has enjoyed painting and coloring on her home easel since she was a toddler so we thought we would encourage her interest and enhance her skills with some art classes at the Glassell Junior School of Art. The art school is connected with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) organization and campus. The building is absolutely beautiful and the classrooms are well equipped for blooming artists striving to become.better at their craft. The current program our daughter is participating in is an "Art Tales" program. A story is read to the students and then they create art afterward that is inspired by the story. Various media are explored and used; drawing, painting, clay sculpting, etc. The class is 2 hours in duration, once weekly, and takes place for a period of 3 months. It's a great program and a sure fire way to enhance cultural enrichment and serve as an expressive and creative outlet. The campus is directly adjacent to the MFAH, so parents can enjoy a day at the museum while children are in class if they feel (membership or admission required) or, simply browse the student art on display in the galleries of The Glassell School of Art (this is free) and there is plenty to see. There is also a sculpture garden on campus to stroll through (for free) and a rooftop deck that makes for some lovely views and photo opportunities. Free street/curbside parking is usually available, otherwise there is a fee-based...
Read moreThis institution, at it's core is racist. Me and a group of my friends were harassed by security guards for doing an impromptu photoshoot. The director of the junior division told us not to touch or put our stuff on the walls (our stuff was no where near the walls). She also said we could have the photoshoot but then sent the head of security to tell us we couldn't do the photoshoot. After one security guard said it was ok to have the photoshoot, he kept sending more security guards to tell us something different. We're Black so of course there was a need to constantly police us as we occupied the space.
This is not a place to grow artistically. I would encourage any African American artist to take their gifts elsewhere. This is not the place to be culturally and...

The MFAH Glassell School of Art was on top of my Houston to-do visit but unfortunately too late to go inside. However you have public access to walk around the outdoor Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza exploring the Cullen Sculpture Garden.
My primary goal was to see the Cloud Column sculpture. I have see in person Cloud Gate (“Chicago Bean”) in Chicago and read the predecessor was being installed here. It was remarkable to see and marvel at. Besides this sculpture there are other amazing ones scattered on the grounds. The artistic environment here is top notch. There was even a splash pad for the kids and covered tables chairs. This nicely landscaped plaza also has a place to dine at...
