Grand Prize Bar is a place I like to go when I feel like sitting in a dimly lit lounge and drinking a craft cocktail. The cocktails are done well and they often update their drink menu with new concoctions and elixers that you have never heard of. They have a lovely craft beer selection as well.
I love that this bar is inside an old house at Bell Park in the Museum District. It is walking distance to the Contemporary Arts museum, among others. There is a pool table and photo booth inside on the bottom floor and I always run in to european Rice students, which will typically make for good conversation about engineering or culture shocks or what-have-you.
Typically, when I go to Grand Prize, I head straight up the stairs and try to score a spot on the patio. They used to have a FANTASTIC downstairs patio- its a shame that went away. thanks to the neighbors (boo).
I suppose you could call Grand Prize a hipster bar, but lets just say that is appeals to people who like to try new things mixed with their favorite spirits in a laid back environment by a park. Oh yeah, where mustaches are welcomed and so are fixie's. It is an easy commute by bike from Montrose or Rice. It's definitely one of my favorite bars in town, and definitely a favorite place to strike up a conversation with a stranger. I have never been...

Excellent selection of beers on tap and in bottle and a rotating menu of frozen drinks (around $6) Sunday happy hour is fab - wells are under $4 most anytime I've been there
More than anything I like the free wifi and upstairs patio before it gets dark / it's a great place to get work done comfortably
Parking kind of ebbs and flows as the bar is directly across from a small little park - the earlier you get there the better - there are lots of street parking options and the neighborhood is pretty quiet
I finally gave in and tried the Sandy Witch Sandwich shop (inside of Grand Prize and without it's own G+ page)TO DIE FOR! Literally I think....? The cooks all wear hooded cloaks and you are sent dark messages on your phone to confirm the status of your order - think cheese and meat laden fries and greasy spoon style burgers but on gourmet buns - fries run anywhere from $3 to $12 depending on how awesome...
ย ย ย Read moreWhat a vibe this place has! Great beer selection and prices are low! Friendly atmosphere for my lgbtq friends. Invited them because I felt it was a very inclusive place when I stopped there by myself for a drink about 2 months ago.
I got 2 amazing dark beers for 3 dollars each last night. That is like a needle in a haystack situation to me. The girls loved their cocktails too and we stuck around longer than we had intended and played a round of pool. I feel comfortable at this bar, very homey. I stopped in last time and the taco kitchen was in. Can't remember what I had but it was really dank and fairly priced. They share a kitchen with a few different food truck type folks, so you can get different food on site depending on what day of the week you come in! Music was on point for the vibes with the disco balls and rainforest backdrops.
3 hour free parking on the street the bar is located on!
If you live close by this place, consider yourself lucky, you may just have found your home...
