This is one of the smaller Best Buy's, (BB), I have been in over the years. Stock is frequently low or missing. Employee product knowledge is missing.
TL;DR In my last visit, stock was low or missing where it should not be.
I was looking to purchase a couple of small sensors ($ + or - $35 ea.) and more lighting (+ or - $85) for my home automation (HA) sytem.
Sensors are critical for most HA systems. They have a low stocking cost, and take up much less floor space compared to TVs and appliances. They can be the kind of item that you must have and sometimes in a hurry.
Yet the BB home automation department routinely has a lot of missing stock. Empty shelves of smaller, but essential items, next to huge displays of products like Google Home, WiFi routers etc. Do you really need an end cap with a couple of hundred Google Home units or Smart Safe silios?
I needed the sensors and lights to work together on my existing Smart Things hub. The lights act as accent lighting, but change color and flash on and off for an alarm. I did not want to use another hub and app.
They couldn't find the answer to the question: Does Phillip Hue system lights completely integrate with SmartThings hubs? Can I control all the light funtions without a Hue Bridge?
If he had the answer, or could have gotten the answer, I would have made a $175+ purchase that day. Didn't happen. They lost the sale (I was willing to pay more than Amazon if they had the product information) and more importantly reinforced that BB is less of an option for future purchases.
If I go in a BB store, that provides a big opportunity for add on sales. Many times I have spent way more than I planned on, buying items I saw in the store.
Over time, the staff I speak with seem to have a general grasp of the product lines they carry. It is rare that they have knowledge greater than what's written on the box. I can't tell you how many times I have asked a question of a salesperson, to have them take the box out of my hands and read it out load to me.
While I appreciate the effort, it doesn't help me, and it doesn't help the store. If big Brick & Morter (B&M) stores can't difference themselves from online retailers like Amazon, they will continue to go the way of chains like Circut City. (Duh)
Another issue I encounter there during holiday periods when they allow vendors from Apple, Verizon, etc.to place their salespeople on the BB sales floor. Frequently they wander the store and place themselves in departments like TVs or appliances, where they approach customers and try and sell their products.
They can be very aggressive. I have repeatedly had to ask them to leave me alone. Once they learn you are not a potential customer they just turn and leave you without helping you find BB staff. Verizon seems to be the worst offender.
Ok, I get they could be a huge help in cell phone departments when the store is swamped, but having them approach you outside of their departments, just doesn't work for me.
What I believe they need is constant product knowledge. Don't take them off the floor to do it. Have a couple of employees specialize in a department. During slow periods draw a few together and let them share product knowledge.
Pressure the suppliers to provide good training materials that can be easily accessed on phones and tablets. Sales staff can view the material during slow periods without leaving the floor.
Incentivize the process. It can be done inexpensively.
I am reluctantly still willing to make my purchases in B&M stores, but only if there is value to offset the hassle. I keep finding that B&M stores don't take advantage of the areas where they can complete with...

Read moreFirst of all, no one's probably going to read this, but if anyone does at the store, good job!
Great Best Buy, and I'm glad it's in Issaquah! Both times my family has come here to make large purchases, we've been treated amazingly by the staff, and when we come for normal browsing/small purchases, the staff is still very nice.
Rachel, supervisor of the Mobile department, treated us like gold compared to how we were treated by other stores, including both other Best Buys and Verizon stores. Compared to the cold corporate personality of the Verizon worker we talked to at one of their stores, as well as some other Best Buy representatives at other stores, she was a diamond in the rough. Right off the bat, she checked to see if there was a cheaper Verizon plan that could suit our needs, and she was incredibly helpful and kind to us throughout our whole visit. She even gave us her card, so hopefully we can contact her if we have any phone needs in the future.
At the same time, I saw a few other customers being treated with almost equivalent care by the other representatives, although the customers had hard-to-reach standards. The representatives seemed helpful and friendly throughout their interactions, however, and the whole team working at this specific Best Buy makes it seem like they're working for you- and not a large corporation.
Farjad from the TV department also treated us like gold, when we bought a flatscreen TV a few years back. Although he may be gone now (we've been told he moved on to Microsoft- great for him!), he truly helped us decided on the right TV while also selling us on a new dishwasher (we had a really old one).
The Geek Squad team at this local BB is also very nice and helpful- which is to be expected- but they also showed us some quick hacks for checking internet speed and having a good TV system.
Thanks to everyone at this Best Buy, and I hope you all stick around!
Definitely worth driving further to go to this store, if you want amazing customer service. We'll definitely be...
