My daughter was born Labor Day weekend almost two years ago. My PP experience at UMMC still haunts me. I can only hope they have improved their processes for new mothers since my experience. I want to make it clear my doctor, Charlene collier was behind amazing. It’s the staff that caused so many issues and trauma.
They had to take my daughter to the nicu 1 hour after her birth because they were not staffed with a transition nurse. Yet they claim to be a mom friendly hospital. I was promised she would be brought to my room shortly after arriving at the post partum floor. However this was far from the case.
I arrived at the PP floor around 6pm. My daughter wasn’t there. I couldn’t get a nurse on the phone from my hospital bed. Thank god I didn’t have an epidural, so I walked to the nurses station. I asked her where is my baby? She said mam, she is in the nicu. We are in the middle of shift change and cannot bring her to you. I said, that is my baby. Please bring her to me. She said “your baby is a patient her, and we are in the middle of shift change, you will have to wait” meanwhile a nurse spoke up and said “you can go visit your baby” in hindsight something the charge nurse should’ve said to me first. Felicia the nurse took me on the elevator downstairs to see my baby. She thank goodness for her humanity and basic nursing skills. I saw my baby 2-3 hours after giving her to the nicu.
From my experience this is not a mom/baby friendly hospital. 2 years later my experience here still haunts me. Often I wonder if my daughter is extra high maintainer and wants to still nurse because of being taken away from her mother at such a crucial time of bonding.
Besides this experience zero was explained to me about how to care for myself PP. (first time mom) there was zero help, I begged for food at least 5 times before a sweet MA at the nurses station offered to get me some fried chicken when she went to get her dinner. I started asking for food right after my daughter was born @ 3:33 (hadn’t been able to hold food or water down for almost 24 hours before) it was 8 pm by the time I ate. Because I could walk to the nurses station and pleaded for food. They would not bring me water without walking to the nurses station either.
My L&D nurse Karen heard about what happened and came up to see me the next day. She asked me to complain so that perhaps it wouldn’t happen to another patient. She was appalled. I should have filed a complaint but was so absorbed with being a first time and single mom it was wasn’t a priority.
Bottom line, for high risk and complications ummc is the best, they have the best doctors in the state. But make sure to have a good team of friends and family who will advocate for you and help to bring you the basics like food and water. This a grossly underserved demographic and understaffed hospital with mostly lazy employees.
Prepare to advocate for yourself, or have people around you who can. There are so many details of neglect that I left out...

Read moreI had to bring my 3 year old son in for an MRI with anesthesia at 6:30 AM. Coming from the coast, I woke up and drove in 3 hours while my son slept. The new facility is amazing. My son was treated so well, and I felt our care was personalized and authentic by all of the providers. The woman at the desk in Radiology waiting room, I believe her name is Brie, she was by far the best part of my experience. She is thoughtful and kind. If she were my employee, she’d be getting a raise!!!!! Dr. King from anesthesia personally checked on my child numerous times. The entire team that brought my child into the MRI was wonderful as a whole. There was a provider that picked him up and carried him in so he wouldn’t be scared in the big rolling “crib”- my baby hugged his neck so tight and was comforted by him. Thankful for you, sir!!! Also my son’s nurse, Catherine Turman, you were a breath of fresh air and I can tell you truly care for your patients. Thank you for all your assurances and helping to keep this mom calm.
There was plenty of room to park in the new parking garage, C, which was brand new and a quick walk to where we needed to go check-in. Some sweet man walked us from the check-in desk all the way to our waiting area in radiology. He scanned my son’s pass to check us in there, seeing as my hands were full. The waiting area is massive, comfortable, and all the tables have USB ports in them to keep your phone charged while waiting. However, don’t plan to wait long. It was a smooth process from check-in to discharge. There appeared to be quality assurance personnel walking around making sure things were going well. That was comforting to know they actually care what type of experience you have. My son has Chiari Malformation and it’s a stressful situation bringing him to frequent appointments. UMMC Children’s at the imaging center- y’all...
