Reviewing cards shops in central Arkansas that play magic as I frequent them enough to review. This location could be a 5there’s too many glaring issues to justify higher than a low 4.
Open until 9 when commander starts at 6. Maybe they’ve found staying until 10 isn’t worth it but games are too long in this format to get more than a couple in (with good fortune) in that time block.
Single selection is minimal, I buy every single I need from LGS to support them but if they don’t have the cards I have to spend that money somewhere else.
Trade ins are by appointment only, they don’t have a buy list so you know if it’s even worth it to set an appointment. One member of the staff is in charge of deciding what they will buy after the cards are reviewed. This is clearly based on workload; but my issue is that I was at the counter by myself on Thursday and besides the lack of customer service tone/verbiage was told she could not stop what she was doing to make an impromptu appointment since I live an hour away and spend 20-100$ every time I walk in. Entitlement isn’t something I dabble in but I am of the opinion you should take exception/put in some extra time and effort for good customers. I went and got the card I wanted from another store, traded in seamlessly.
Player base is mostly full pods so you’ll need a group or fill in with randoms. I’d recommend the former to avoid Magic’s well known issue of toxic “casual” players. There’s an employee who plays, in my first game with him another player was asking if I was sure I wanted to let him draw instead of making a 1/1, I said I could handle a 1/1 implying I’d prefer that to a card draw. The employee said something along the lines of “watch it” or “cut that out” to us and besides the familiarity completely misunderstood my context. The worst part is that’s probably from habit as I’m sure babysitting is a part of his job, there’s just too many people to play magic with to settle with a passive aggressive or condescending group.
Positives are there, the owner was always lovely and the sealed/gear selection isn’t lacking. I did have pods that I enjoyed playing with. I’m keeping a low standard frankly because LGS in Arkansas aren’t going to compete with where it’s popular, but the main issues I have could be solved with additional/better trained staff. Especially in the play room, there’s on kid there every week that as a single parent of an autistic child I can see his neurodivergence where I perceive others as treating him like the weird kid. I played and he’s very green, I had to explain most of his cards to him but he understood after hearing me with little question. I think staff should take time to play with him so he can learn the game and not be left out by groups used to playing faster games. This is the same guy I mentioned before; so I’ve seen the employee atleast play once with him. Inclusivity is rooted/radiates in this game, and every LGS should be a haven for any player, but any marginalized group goes through battles you’ll never see and extra effort is worth the end result of them...
Read moreMy husband and I went to a few comic book stores today on a little date.Decided to check out D2 comics. Atmosphere was cool at first. We were greeted by Moose.Start checking out the merchandise and then went straight to the comic books. Everything was still great, the female that works there came seemed friendly and said if you need any help just wave at the camera or holler..That was off putting, not everyone steals and I found it kinda rude to let us know we are being watched. That's a giving. We said screw it and continued to enjoy ourselves. Come time to check out and the whole mood changed, the Moose guy was wasn't so friendly anymore, tried to conversate with him, definitely couldn't care less. Probably won't go back which sux because we live in Jacksonville. But also once again have been let down with the folks...
Read moreD2 Comics is an amazing Mom and Pop shop located right in the heart of Jacksonville. The owner is one of the only females to own a comic shop in the entire state. The quality of product and stock in this store is superb for its location and the surrounding area. The family atmosphere and appearance is a great destination for people of all ages to appreciate. The owners are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about all things nerd related. The table top space is large enough to host events while not to large you must shout across to be heard. The prices are fair and their product is as stocked as possible in these hard times. If you only have 1 shop to visit while you are in the area this should...
