Update 7/8/24
Sol Spirit is a great little studio in the heart of the Jersey City Heights on Palisade Ave. This vibrant single room space offers a variety of classes ranging from Yin, Restorative classes, Sound Baths, Holistic Yoga classes -rooted in pranayama practices- to very āflowyā Vinyasa classes with good rigor, as well as HIIT yoga. They offer various workshops and even Yoga Teacher Training. The teachers at the studio are knowledgeable and each brings something unique to the community. They are friendly, authentic and deeply caring of their students, the studio, and honoring Yogic traditions. Beyond all of this, the most striking thing about Sol Spirit is the way in which the studio engages with the community. There have been many people that Iāve met whoāve found their special space in the Heights through their practice at Sol Spirit. The studio is engaged in local events and they often offer free or donation-based community classes and yoga in the park. Please check them out. The owner Liz is super approachable, enthusiastic and caring of each individual who walks through the doors. The studio is a clear reflection of her vision.
7/2023 I really enjoy this studio (itās beautiful, clean, and has great offerings). I particularly enjoy James as my instructor.
Iāve been practicing yoga for over five years intermittently, but consistently since early 2019. I enjoy the physical components of a deep yoga practice but I relish in the spiritual nature of a practice which guides me to a place deep within myself. Jamesā instruction is steeped in both the physical and spiritual aspects of yoga. His classes embrace tradition in a way that is gentle, friendly and inviting. He is deeply respectful of the roots of each asana. Working with James in my most recent yoga practices has helped me foster a deeper appreciation for the messages -both physical and spiritual- that Yoga offers. My experience with James as a teacher has left me with a deeper sense of gratitude for the instructor who can carefully and mindfully braid physical practice with spiritual observance.
I can say that since working with James as my teacher, Iām more comfortable with who I am as a practitioner and the spiritual elements instilled in class linger long after Iāve left the mat. Iām deeply grateful for Jamesā enthusiasm, insight, and vulnerability to share his love with...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUPDATE - 8/8/23 The instructors at Sol Spirit had an unexpectedly practical impact on my daily life. One day, I needed to fix something on top of a window and decided to get up on a chair. (I DONāT recommend this, use a step ladder folks!).
The chair slid as I got up on it with one foot and I almost wiped out, but my SolSpirit zen-yoga-ninja instincts kicked in and I was able to glide with stability and control on the chair into a one-legged balance thanks to my ever-evolving Tree Pose practice.
I thought about all of the instructors that taught me over 10 years and felt triumphant as I avoided a YouTube worthy wipe-out. I felt my aura surge to thank my instructors while striking a pose that made gravity (and living room furniture) respect my yoga skills.
Namaste!
ORIGINAL REVIEW - 7/7/2023
Sol Spirit is a community-based yoga studio - this place is instrumental is helping me regain and keep the sense of magic, wonder, relaxation, and clarity that can be elusive in such a busy, rushed, disconnected, and anxiety filled city.
Liz started the studio during a rough time ā right after the COVID-19 pandemic and without a doubt kept the yoga community alive in the Jersey City heights. The teachers are world class and are all highly trained, capable, and intuitive.
I have taken almost all the classes and can confidently say that no matter which you decide to take, you are in great hands. It is very difficult to encapsulate how special this place is in words ā take a class...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWow, absolutely love the vibe of this studio! Been looking for something lowkey, that focuses on the mental exercise as much as the physical in yoga. Not to knock them, but a lot of the other studios in town are great, but focus more on hot yoga or an overtly physical workout, whereas I look for yoga to help with anxiety and mental clarity. I took the Friday night Yin + Soundbath with Desiree to kick off my birthday weekend. I loved the way Desiree led the class, it felt gentle but I still got an EXCELLENT stretch, and the sound bowls added a layer of peace and relaxation. The range of classes offered at Sol Spirit fit the bill -- cmon, a Sunday night yoga class for anxiety? Perfect. Overall, I just like that they're offering something unique and different that others in the area. It's a paired back studio but has everything you need. The only disadvantage is being on Bloomfield Ave the parking can be a pain and also the honking of horns, but I was able to get so relaxed with Desiree's class, I hardly noticed. Also, it's next to the Cat Cafe, which is a fun bonus for us...
