Seasonal cold brew for me, a latte for my colleague. Blueberries and currants... But this isn't flavored coffee. I understand. This place is for coffee purists and I'm OK with that. Akin to a farm to table experience or scoring a hit from your corner dealer, if you do not come here with the mindset to sample only coffee then please abstain.

I GET IT; the store is cramped, the employees aren't greeting you like an auntie you haven't seen since pre-puberty, and the non-dairy options weren't strained through silk sourced from organic fair-trade crop shares. But it is what IT IS. Call it hipster arrogance, whatever. Starbucks had a dream then died to the thunderous applause of capitalism, mass appeal, and artificially flavored syrups. Modcup and specialty coffee shops elsewhere will continue to thrive, albeit to the small audience that can still taste the beans for what they are. And that too I'm OK with.

TL;DR: Look at the floor, step up to the counter, order your coffee, pay, and...

I got the hot 16 oz, with oat milk and a shot of hazlenut. They have huge pour over machines, traditional drip coffee etc. and they seemed to be more for show. The barista got the coffee out of a pump carafe. I got the bottom of the barrel of one and some of the next one they had lined up, and the coffee ended up not even being luke warm at best right as it was handed to me. He also didn't shake the oat milk before he poured it in which meant I only got what was separated from the top which you could tell from the color of it as well. I paid $5 to take 3 sips and throw it out a few steps down the street. Seems like this more of a novelty hipster spot more interested in selling the beans and branded apparel than what is supposed to be their craft. I was very disappointed - was hoping for this to be my new local shop. Also no seating inside as some others have stated, its a walk up counter in a (fortunately for them) great area of town, right across the street from...

I am sure many people have had only positive experiences at this café. I even had a positive experience a couple of years ago. Today was a whomp moment for the café. I was standing in front of the register ready to order and a woman walked in after me. I waited for a few minutes and when the employee was ready to take orders again she skipped me and took the order of the woman behind me. Now just know I looked around ahead of time to make sure I made the line and I didn't skip anybody. I felt like my business was not welcomed so I walked out. I normally don't give bad reviews but this was deserved even if it was an accident. You never know what someone is going through and small mistakes like that can cost a business a customer. I am sure they will do just fine without my business. But an earned review is just that. I wish them the best but I will not...

I ordered a 20oz chai iced tea with macadamia mylk and coconut sweetener and it paired perfectly with their delicious almond croissant (ask if it can be warmed). Price wise, it’s about 2x what I might spend at Dunkin Donuts for a similar order but trust me, your tastebuds and metabolism will thank you! The decor and ambiance remind me of a fusion between modern & boho chic with an urban twist. This def sets the vibes. Plus, the menu is laid out so cleanly and creatively (eg there’s a category for ‘mylk’ or nondairy alternatives). It was good to know that modcup is not exclusively a coffee shop and there are tea and pastry options. And I have to mention, although I didn’t catch their name, my barista had this funky, quirky energy that was awesome. I do wish they’d add some honey to their menu but overall, 🔥🔥🔥 coffee shop in Jersey City Heights.
