Throughout the years this shelter has went down hill. My first couple of encounters were great as I would find strays wondering around my neighborhood and bring them in to find their owners. But within the last year the employees are ridiculous, rude, and they simply can’t abide by their own website.
A poor pup I found recently was completely skin and bones and clearly been on the streets awhile. When I brought him in the person I encountered was great. She scanned twice for a microchip and how much I wanted to keep this pup home with me he seemed very food aggressive and my 2 dogs at home wouldn’t like that. I asked if I could call and come in to check on him since I never had a dog I didn’t bring in have a chip and he obviously needed some loving. She answered of course. Next day I gave a call to see how well he was doing and the lady barely let me get a word in without repeatedly asking me what his intake number was. She only said he was on stray hold and would be put up for adoption in a bout a week. Cool, but that wasn’t what I asked. I told myself since I was out pet sitting for some clients I would drop by to see how he was adapting and let him see a friendly face. No one was at the front so I waited a bit until I saw a lady come up. I tried to explain to her I brought a stray dog in that was skin and bones and I would like to see him. She immediately became hostile and stated that no I couldn’t see him and if I wanted to see him he would be up for adoption on Friday. I simply responded back he was just skin and bones and I couldn’t get him off my mind how bad he looked. She became rude and tried to gaslight me by saying “yeah well we see animals like that come in everyday and I wasn’t here yesterday so I take your word for it but no you can’t get see him or get a update” I just said ok and walked out. I’ve later found out the animals have 72 hours for a stray hold and they euthanize them which makes sense why she refused to let me see the poor pup.
I now have been taken care of a sick cat and tried calling the shelter multiple times to get an appointment for a euthanasia as they offer them on their website. I sent a email to schedule and got a response that I have to come in first to sign as a surrender and surrenders are fully booked and if it’s an actual euthanasia to just go to a vet. No one said anything about a surrender and if you can’t provide owner euthanasia then update your website. I get they probably all have thick skin having to not only work with abused, neglected animals, and also hostile people but the way they’re doing business for people who are animal lovers and are just trying to help is just ridiculous. i hope they can either become nicer to the people trying to help them with their jobs or find new employees and...
Read moreAfter reading the Killeen Animal Shelters fb reviews of other people’s experiences, I was extremely nervous about taking a stray in yesterday that had been running loose in our neighborhood for about 3-4 days. It was rare to find a review that had anything positive to say about the Shelter. As soon as I entered the lobby of the Shelter I was greeted with a smile and a, “Hi, How are you?” Followed directly by, “How can we help you today?” There was a total of 4 employees, all 4 were very friendly, helpful and smiling. I was helped with the paperwork that I needed to fill out for turning in a stray. I had written up a note prior to coming about the things I had learn about the stray in the last couple of days. Everyone should always write things down, you should out of courtesy do so because we are all human beings and no one should be expected to remember every single thing you are going to ramble off to them. I was then accompanied out to my car to retrieve the dog, along with the items that my husband and I were donating along with the sweet German Shepherd. As we walked back in I seen them trying to get a picture of her but she was so timid and scared like so many are, so I offered to e-mail them some photos I had taken of her and they were more than happy to give me their e-mail so I could send them. In no time they did in fact use the photos I had e-mailed and had her up on PetHarbor as Stray Hold A100227 “Sabine” will be here name. I just wanted to come on here to let everyone know that from the moment I entered Killeen Animal Shelter yesterday until the moment I left I had a VERY good experience. To kind of cover all the negative reviews I read, when I was there ALL the employees were courteous, polite, helpful and happy. I was a Vet Tech for many years and I have a very sensitive nose, my husband can testify to that, so I also want to state that the Shelter was a CLEAN facility with absolutely no bad smells! My mind and heart was at ease for the very shy and timid German Shepherd when I left her with those amazing people yesterday. They listened to everything I had to say and were very kind to not only Sabine but to me as well. Thank So Much!...
Read moreWe had been looking for a kitten or cat to add to our household. Our current cat needed a friend and us being cat lovers were ecstatic about adding another to our family. We searched around a few places and couldn’t find one locally in Cove. For some reason the Animal Control in Copperas Cove made you go in circles to adopt and the demeanor of the place didn’t sit well in our stomachs, so we looked into adopting from the Killeen one. At first, we were very skeptical since a lot of the reviews were alarming, but we always stick to our experience first, so we drove out there once it opened and took a look around. Once you walk inside you’re greeted by whoever is front( if they’re not busy with anyone else). It looks very nice with the large desk in front; adopted/taken cats are in the crates right as you enter.
The staff has genuine smiles and I’m sure the stress is high working/volunteering there so we appreciated the immediate kindness when we walked in. We let them know that we wanted to look at the cats, they had us sign in and directed us to the door that led us to the fuzzy friends. There was a lady in there(hate that I couldn’t get her name) she was so sweet though and let us look around, told us about each cat and which ones were available. If the cats were social or not, etc. The one we saw on the website wasn’t there, but the tiny two-month orange/white domestic one grabbed our hearts. Sersi looked a bit shy; it was fine though, we knew she needed to come to her new home. We picked her out and everything went really well. They explained to us that we didn’t need to do anything because her shots, microchip, and spay were done. They gave us all the proof and a nice little take home bag with kitten food, blanket, and a scratching post. The experience was pleasant and we’re glad we have a new addition to our home. Thank you Killeen Animal Services!
I will update the review in a few months of how...
