The nurse on swing shift, Shelly who works with dr. Zitek in emergency on 7-20-17, when ask to get off the AMR'S gerhney and walk in the room and get on the bed. I was very explicit I couldn't even walk. I heard another nurse say "he doesn't belong in this dept" and RN Shelly said to AMR to just push he in the room and slide he on the bed. The AMR driver said there are no rails on that bed to nurse Shelly. Shelly asked the drivers to push me and the bed against the wall before they left.. 2 different PA'S came in my room and kept telling me the dr. would be in-i believe UMC does this with PA'S to raise their bill because I have good insurance, each PA asked the very same questions- on the second PA I became suspicious and demanded to see a dr.. The dr. Zitek came in and ask what was me expectations from today's visit!! Never had this happen in ANY MEDICAL FACILITY. And I have had both total hip replacements, left shoulder rotate cuff, left knee 3 surgeries, right knee 1 surgery, and I could go on- I was there because I was in between my second and 3rd epidural on my L4-L5 lower back. Tried to get out of my rocker recliner and felt something give, couldn't move and had to call ambulance. Dr. Zitek heard my story and that i didn't like several PA'S asking same question, I was CONSTANTLY begging for something for pain, and was constantly told it was coming. A pain shot came approximately an hour and half after arriving into my room at UMC on Charleston Ave. As the nurse Shelly gave me the shot, and both PA' s kept expressing how you just have this pain when your disc's are bulged or herniated. I kept explaining I knew pain and something happened or I would have rode down in my own car not ambulance. She discounted my pain stain her husband as the exact same thing and comes home from work weekly with this same pain. I explained to her that I can't feed myself or care for myself home alone. Nurse Shelly told me that I could live for 90 days without eating. My girlfriend is younger than myself and she ask her age, she knew mine, and Shelly made comment about her age right there in front of her!! I CAN'T BELIEVE THE UMC HOSPITAL STAFF, AND MY GIRLFRIEND WAS SITTING IN THE ROOM AND HEARD ALL THIS !! When Dr. Zitek ask what was my expectations today? I told him I need my back checked, I need something for pain, I fear something worse has happened to my back !! He stated, in front of both of us, that I was allowed to skip in front of 9 patients because I came in an ambulance, and yes he will get me something for the pain and get me an xray. I told him I've been told that you can't tell from xray if it's bulged, heniated or exploded. Dr. Zitek said he could tell from just xrays maybe others can't. I also complained to him about the bed had no rails and the head didn't go up or down, I was told I was against the wall and nothing would happen to me. He left me in my room after xray for a good 1 and half to 2 hours until his shift ended before he came back. Told me L5 looked herniated! ! Said he would give me prescription for inflammation, predizone, and a mild pain killer. I told he this would NOT give me relief for 4 more days until my next epidural! ! Dr. Zitek said he believed it would, I said if it doesnt? He said come back and will go to the next plan. I asked him to give me an mri, because I believe there's more problems. DR. ZITEK LAUGHED AT IN FRONT OF MY GIRLFRIEND saying "what do you want me to do call nerology and ask them to mri your back?' I said yes !! DR. LAUGHED AT ME AGAIN AND SAID THEY WOULDN'T DO IT !!! DO NOT GO HEAR,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGreat doctors, horrible nurses, phenomenal food service members, terrible organization, and long waits
If you have a medical issue that doesn't require an overnight stay, and can get into the surgery room quickly, I'd say that this place is a great choice, but otherwise I'd recommend looking for another location instead.
The fact that the simple act of leaving felt like fighting against a brick wall, and that it took an additional 2-3 days after my planned dismissal date to be discharged should give you an idea just how mismanaged they are, and to pour salt on the wound, it turns out that they couldn't even do that properly, causing issues and delays on life saving material I needed post visit!
And that's not even including the nurses, which vary from satisfactory to nightmarish. The nurses often had no empathy for the patients, and would often lie, ignore, and belittle them and their visitors. Just to make it clear this wasn't every nurse, but rather the majority of nurses I encountered during my week and a half stay.
Most other members of staff where great and kind people, such as the case managers, as well as members from transportation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, doctors, and food services where all wonderful.
Sadly though they aren't the people whom you'll be spending most of your time with, which is a shame, because if everyone was as good as the people I just mentioned I'd be tempted to give this place five stars, which I guess is a testament to just how bad the nurses are.
To give a single example to just how bad the nurses are, let me tell you about one of them, Amy, who tried to (without warning) unconsensually take off my hospital gown nearby an open space. At best this felt like sexual harassment/public humility and at worst felt like the start to a sexual assault. Just to be clear, Amy did not actually physically assault me (or at least touch my genitals) but it was terrifying at the moment, not to have that it got worse when she then closed the door to the small bathroom, and inadvertently causing her to block off the only exit. This was not only unprofessional, but also emotionally distressing.
I reported it to a hospital quality manger, and I figured that there'd be a change of nurses after such an encounter, but it turned out that I'd have her for a few more days afterwards, and the only reason I stopped having her was because the entire nursing groups on my floor was changed, likely as part of a routine event.
These issues are just the tip of the iceberg, the nurses aren't the only problem, but I don't have the time to go into other issues such as the difficult bureaucracy, the wait times, the unreasonably short staff, and the genuinely impressive amount of incompetency that has many simple tasks far more difficult.
TLDR: almost everyone but the nurses is great, but you'll be spending 95% of your time with the nurses, who are miserable, they are also very slow, so if it's an emergency it's probably best to go somewhere else, and if you have to stay overnight it's not worth your time going here.
Also if you get a nurse named Amy, who appears to be of Asian decent and wears glasses, be aware that she will do what she wants without your consent, which may include forcefully taking off your clothes or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreVery, very disheartening. You ONLY care about $$$. We moved here barely a month ago from across the country. I am a KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PATIENT. That means I have an organ from a deceased donor! Apparently you expect me to make an appointment with a nephrologist who sees transplant patients and understands labs and antirejection medicine, (not all nephrologist can do this), sign papers to transfer care, wait for records to transfer from across the country, possibly waiting for this particular nephrologist here to get records and order labs. Just how long do you think for a second that is going to take??? Appointments, medical records, etc, take time! I bring lab orders in hand and paying insurance and you are too money hungry and incompetent to print out and fax for a patient, who was looking to establish a relationship with a doctor in your system. You do not care about the patient, as you expect me a paying customer to do the leg work I am paying you to do. Why? You only care about money, saying, "we do not send labs to outside doctors". Do you realize my health is NOT about you? I have never in my life had to send my own labs to my doctors!!!. I never in my life had to make a second trip to go to a records office to sign over a standing monthly lab order because as a hospital or a medical facility you are either too stupid or have to be dicks about it. Truth be told, most months, I wait for my nephrologist to contact me about any changes. They get labs back, call if there is an issue. Also these labs come in multiple times, meaning it can take up to a week for all lab results to come in. You mean to tell me, my current (for this time) is not allowed to see them as they come in? Guess what? When you put the patient first, you make sure that patient's doctor gets the result, as those results come jn. The fact you made me jump through hoops told me you don't give a damn about a patient. That is completely disgusting, disheartening, disturbing. I have never been treated this way! This is a vital ORGAN! This is a person's life! Rejection, infection, a bad uti needs to be caught early, not thrown around, like you did to me. My insurance covers treatment at your facility. Both physicians could see labs, whether it was today or when a future appointment was going to be made. All one of your transplant nephrologists would have to do, when appointment is available, look on their computer. Until that appointment is made, I can be seen by my established provider. After my experience, I am sick to my stomach. I understand a doctor in the system needs to sign off for it to be put into the system. I understand a nephrologist saying "I will not see you unless all care is transferred here". Out patient labs? None of your business where a patient wants labs sent to. That should be my right as a patient where labs are sent to! Draw the blood and send the results to where the patient wants! You lost me as a paying customer with insurance. I can't trust any of you to help me keep my kidney. Since all you care about is money, money you will probably let my kidney die (probably only allowing labs quarterly), just so you can make more money putting me on kidney dialysis. That is...
