The Establishment and History of Gold Wheel Monastery
This account is based on a conversation between the late Venerable Master Hsuan Hua and lay disciple Hu Guoxiang on March 31, 1993, at Long Beach Monastery.
The origins of Gold Wheel Monastery trace back to 1976, when a group of new Buddhist followers in Los Angeles began seeking a qualified spiritual teacher. Not knowing that such a master was already in San Francisco, some even traveled to Taiwan in search. Upon discovering Venerable Master Hsuan Hua in the U.S., they arranged to take refuge with him. The group grew so large that they eventually had to rent a large hall to host the ceremony, which was attended by over 200 people, from infants to elders in their 80s.
Venerable Master compassionately agreed to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles and began visiting regularly with other monastics to give teachings. In response to the community’s enthusiasm, the first location of Gold Wheel Monastery was established in a former daycare center in 1976.
A few years later, the monastery moved to a slightly larger site on Huntington Drive, between South Pasadena and Alhambra. Though old and in need of renovation, it accommodated around 150 people and was gradually improved with the help of the community. In time, a larger facility was found on Sixth Street—a former, dilapidated church that required over a year of dedicated restoration by lay volunteers.
Eventually, the monastery relocated once again to its current home on 58th Street. At the time, the property showed significant exterior cracks due to the recent earthquake and was sold below market value. However, a structural engineer confirmed the damage was superficial and that the building had a very solid foundation. The Venerable Master agreed to purchase the site, and many laypeople volunteered their time and effort to renovate it. Today, that location remains the home of Gold Wheel Monastery, a center for Buddhist study and practice in...
