I have never been to Singapore. Friends, travel websites and Youtube videos claim that it's worth visiting. Since travel restrictions have eased up, I decided to travel internationally for the first time since Dec 2019. I was debating to fly ANA/JAL (my usual go to airline) or Singapore Airlines to fly to the Philippines where most of my family live. I watched a lot of YouTube bragging about the airlines. So, I booked an economy flight. The check in staff at LAX are very kind and polite. Security was a breeze because I finally got my Global Entry approval, but boarding is less desirable. Economy passengers are treated like cattle. I expect economy seats will be roomy (for a short old man like me) as all YouTubers claim. I found it felt similar to ANA's and JAL's. But as soon as my neighbor in front of me reclines, the IFE is 6 inches away from my face and seat in front of me pinches my knee and I am only 5' 7." Food (chicken is chewy) was less desirable, though the bread roll I received was soft. Lavatory is not that impressive. ANA airbus lavatory is better and the crew are very pleasant. Changi Airport, thank God has a 24 hr food court when we arrived before 5 am and it also has a pleasant airport lounge for 50+ SGD that kind of offset a less desirable 17 hour long flight. I may go back to ANA or JAL that flies directly from San Diego. Singapore has very beautiful city gardens and friendly cab drivers during my 8-hour layover and a quick detour. Getting out of immigration was a breeze because I filled out an SG arrival card online before my flight from LAX.

I have flown economy all around the county and I’ve also flown business class on Swiss Air, El Al. Air France and Delta. This was my first experience flying in an international airlines in first class. And, yes, there is a big difference from economy to business class, and in my experience, a big difference from Business Class to First Class. I’m sure I would have been perfectly happy in business class, but it was full when we booked our tickets. I round trip first class from LAX to Narita, Japan, arriving home last week, It’s not going to be easy to go back to American Airlines after this phenomenal experience. There were only 4 seats in first class both ways. Each of us had two flight attendants catering to all requests. I was extremely happy with absolutely everything! I was quite surprised on my return trip to hear the passenger next to me request the exact year of each bottle of wine offered. The flight attendant came back with a glasses and gave him a taste of every single wine. Personally, I would be embarrassed to make such requests, but the flight attendant happily complied. I also enjoyed the food, soft pajamas and how the flight attendant made me a full bed with a comforter and soft pillows and even sheets! I was in no hurry for the flight to come to an end because it was truly enjoyable. I’m grateful to have had the experience.

I had heard great things about Singapore Airlines, especially their business class service and comfort, which is why I chose to book my flight with them. Unfortunately, my experience did not meet those expectations—particularly as an older passenger with knee pain and limited mobility.

The business class seats on the long-haul flights (Los Angeles to Singapore and back) were surprisingly cramped and poorly designed for anyone who isn’t very flexible. The seating required me to sit at an angle, and it was difficult to stretch my legs forward. For someone with stiff joints, this setup was very uncomfortable. On the shorter legs (Singapore to Kochi and back), the seating allowed me to stretch out more comfortably, which was a noticeable improvement.

As for the food, I had requested a South Indian vegetarian meal, but what I received bore little resemblance to South Indian cuisine. It tasted more like an odd, flavorless mix than a thoughtfully prepared meal. I was left feeling hungry most of the time, and while I had been told that snacks would be available throughout the flight, I was never offered any. When I finally asked, I was handed a packet of chips—the worst I’ve ever had.

The cabin crew appeared rushed and impersonal. While they wore smiles, they felt rehearsed and not genuinely attentive. It was difficult to get their full attention, and at no point did anyone explain that snacks were available in the galley or that I could help myself. As a first-time flyer with Singapore Airlines, I would have appreciated more guidance and proactive service.

Overall, this was not the comfortable or premium experience I was expecting from a highly rated airline. I hope they consider improving the comfort and communication aspects of their business class service—especially for older travelers who may need a little extra...

Summary: Disappointing Experience with Singapore Airlines for Business Class Passengers with Disabilities

As a frequent traveler who opted for business class, I never imagined I'd be compelled to leave a 1-star review for Singapore Airlines—a carrier reputed for quality service. Unfortunately, our recent experience has been deeply disappointing, particularly concerning their treatment of passengers with disabilities.

Despite purchasing transpacific business class tickets, we faced severe disruptions which necessitated rerouting and resulted in significant extra costs and inconveniences. Despite clear assurances from multiple airline representatives, Singapore Airlines failed to reimburse us for necessary ground transportation, a commitment especially critical for one of our party members who is elderly and requires wheelchair assistance.

We attempted multiple times to resolve this issue amicably, reaching out through the proper channels and even directly addressing higher management. Each time, our efforts were met with a lack of response or dismissive templated apologies, without any attempt to address the core issues or fulfill promised compensations.

This disregard not only for basic customer service but also for the special needs of disabled passengers is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the airline's commitment to passenger rights and quality service. It is distressing that an airline of this stature would so thoroughly fail to meet its obligations in business class, forcing us to consider further actions to seek justice.

Our experience is a stark warning to others, particularly those traveling with disabilities, about what might lie behind the polished facade of Singapore Airlines. Think twice before booking if your travel might depend on their reliability and...
