If they weren’t trying to help save the planet, I would’ve given them three stars…
I really like a lot of what this place has to offer. Like another review mentions, it would be helpful to have the price per lb. This is the only store with bulk items in the 4 states I’ve shopped in that have their prices in ounces. Every other non-bulk grocery store has their prices in cost per lb too. This would save you from the nasty surprise of having to pay near $20 for a jar of peanut butter (their peanut butter is the priciest out of all the bulk stores in the Fort Collins areas and I will not be buying it here again).
Tangentially related, your employees should be trained on the difference between ounces and lbs. Having been a bring-your-own-glass-jar bulk shopped for 7 years now, I weigh mine out at home and put the tare weight on the top in pounds (because that’s how all the other stores need the tare weights to be labeled). So when checking out at yours, my jaw dropped at the prices as the cashier was ringing me up. I asked her if she could re-weigh one of them. I then realized she was subtracting the rate weights in ounces and not pounds! I had to explain to her that the normal size mason jar is 1 lb and not one ounce. She had been taking the lb weights and subtracting them out as ounces (for the small .58 lb mason jar she only subtracted .58 ounces). She had to redo my entire check out. Though I want to give grace, it is frustrating that something as elementary as this is not known by your staff. I know she was new, but I don’t think it should be on the consumer to make sure the cashier is ringing them up correctly. PLEASE ensure your staff understands base conversions. They should be able to look at a normal size mason jar and know that it’s in or around a lb and that means it’s in or around 16 ounces.
I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they will hopefully take this feedback and ensure that each employee is competent. We need more businesses like you that are trying; however, you could totally see how many people might never have come back after this experience.
All this said, I will continue to support them unless this becomes habitual as they do have really cool local soap, vegan gummy bears, textured vegetable protein, and protein...
Read moreI have celiac disease, so I need to avoid gluten. I've loved the idea of buying and saving in bulk but had to be very concerned about cross contamination. I recently was in and wanted to share my experience for other celiacs out there.
There is a nice selection of gluten free grains, pastas, beans, legumes and flours that one would use for gluten free baking. There was even gluten free rolled oats, amaranth, buckwheat kasha, rices, etc. The store previously shared with me that they use good practices to prevent cross contamination, and I was relieved to see that every container had its own spoon and cleanliness and separation were made easy. The gluten free flours were in their own section. Nuts and other items with shared manufacturing with allergens had the label taped to the bin.
I was very impressed with the selection and quality I saw. The process was easy, though of course it takes a little more effort to bring your own containers from home. Seeing the selection comforted me that I would be able to buy smaller amounts more frequently of safe foods to feed my family and there could be good variety from one source.
There was also bulk spices, teas, coffee beans, household supplies, fresh ground nut butters, olive oil and vinegars. So much good stuff, and the containers to store them in if you are transitioning!
I don't allow any food with gluten in my home and I'm very careful to avoid cross contamination exposure. If I react to anything I have purchased from here I will let the store know and post an update. I feel pretty safe based on what...
Read moreIts nice, but the prices arent competitive for what you are getting. In theory i would purchase all my dry goods here, but the pricing structure doesnt necessarily match the self serve portioning and being your own packaging aspect. everything is well sourced and organic etc, but the pricing difference is still large enough that im still tempted to purchase many things elsewhere. I have shopped twice and twice i have had small issues with the store employees. The first time the girl behind the counter didnt ask if i was a member of the loyalty program or let me know when to enter that info, so she ended up voiding and redoing the transaction without asking me first. Was not happy about that lack of communication. The second time i brought my own container and the employee almost overcharged me by $15 because she included the weight of my container… since thats a part of the store model i shouldn't have to speak up to avoid being overcharged. Still love the concept, but there are kinks. Would love if employees were a little more proactive/ helpful.
Also- list the price per pound not just oz. Oz is fine for herbs and spices but i would like to see price per pound on larger pantry goods that are typically...
