I didn’t even go inside…this store felt uninviting and out of touch. The Confederate flag is prominently displayed and central to the theme, which says a lot. There’s a time and place for things, and this isn’t it (Jack Daniels Distillery Tours). The Confederacy fought to keep slavery legal and the flag was later used to oppose civil rights. Many see it as a symbol of white supremacy and racial oppression, even if some call it heritage. The owner’s comment replies reflect a selective view of history. Be mindful.
Update: Your claims about George Dance and Phillip Reese are incorrect. Both men were Black Tennesseans who rejected the Confederacy and everything it stood for. Neither “rode with Forrest” nor fought for the Confederate cause. The notion of “Black Confederates” is a myth born from postwar revisionism, not historical evidence. If you want the truth about their real stance and the broader distortion of this history, I recommend reading Kevin M. Levin’s Searching for Black Confederates (UNC Press, 2019).
The Confederacy’s own documents make its purpose unmistakable: preserving slavery and racial hierarchy. Recognizing that reality isn’t being narrow-minded—it’s understanding history as it actually happened. Dance and Reese stood for survival and dignity in defiance of a system built to oppress them. Their legacy, not the myth, deserves to be remembered. Stop living in fantasy and come...
Read moreI had the pleasure of meeting Mike during my visit to this store for the first time. He was kind enough to answer my questions though I had hoped he would express some of that good ole southern pride I hear so much about.
I learned that this business has been in this location for 10 years and when the stay at home order kept tourists away he could stay open due to the fact that theu sell beer and wine making supplies. What a cool guy! He even used to play the Bass professionally. He didn't elaborate on what stopped him from playing any more. He seemed focused on things other than me shopping. Though I know he was watching me. I am hard to miss. I am a tourist though I'm more interested in people and their passions than the things they choose to surround themselves with. I wonder if he was ashamed. I'd ask him but don't care. We all have our perspective. I am gald he could sustain his livelihood when the world had to sit down for a bit.
Give him a chance to earn your business. You can find all sorts of confederate flag having items. Cups, hats, belt buckles, key chains and the like. How about that?

Read moreThanks to the good recommendation of my dear friends Valeriya and Dillon, I stopped by at this gem of a place on my way back from Alabama and it did not disappoint!
Running late as always, I gave a call asking if the kind gentleman could wait on me, which he did. Mike the owner immediately greeted me with a big smile and kindness. He remembered my friends who stopped by earlier that week and was eager to tell me about the Confederate soldiers in his family, what his Southern heritage means to him, and how much he loves his wife Julie. It was a heartwarming experience to say the least.
Of course I couldn't leave the shop without buying a "few" souvenirs and to my surprise Mike was generous with his discounts, despite the merchandise being already reasonably priced, and even threw in a book and a couple of other knick knacks for free as he admired my curiosity for the literature and was thankful for my business. Due to my clumsy self, my phone broke during my shopping spree but Mike was kind enough to guide me to the closest Verizon store which was a good 25 kilometers away. I can't wait to stop by during my next...
