Madera District Fair — Local services in Madera

Very small fair, but packed with so much to do and see. I suggest buying tickets and wrist bands in advance at Rancho San Miguel and save at least $10. Check out the vendors room for lots of freebies from local businesses and agencies. The food is amazing I had bbq mix plate and it was enough food for 2 to enjoy with a variety of tri tip tender and well seasoned, juicy flavorful chicken and spicy sausage a side salad, beans and a roll. For dessert you can't go wrong with the funnel cake although I thought it was a bit pricey. They charge extra for whip cream and extra for strawberries.. like anyone would want a plain funnel cake with just the powder sugar, I think those toppings should be automatically included. Some great exhibits worth viewing were the agriculture contests where people enter in different vegetables or plants or flowers. Lots of unique and interesting displays for any garden or nature lover. Don't forget the stand alone gardens out in the area where the animals are.... It was sad that not too many people submitted garden plots so there were a lot empty, but those who did submit gardens did a beautiful job. Also great fun was the arts room where they had photography, quilts and a wide variety of arts and crafts. Probably my most favorite was the pig races, absolutely adorable and so much fun to watch kids will love it and adults. I didn't ride the rides because I missed the opportunity to buy our wrist bands in advance and It was too exspensive at the fairgrounds,. The Madera District Fairgrounds is home to our small town fair annually in September. It brings out just about everyone in town, whether its for a concert, the kiddie rides, the hand made exhibits or the beer. Even with so many people in attendance, I don't recall hearing of many incidents and problems here.

The grounds are also home to Hatfield Hall where yearly events are held in the community, such as the crab feed and the job fair. Its also available for rent for private parties. Its a good size and is great for just about any function.

The fairgrounds are now next to a Lowe's in a shopping center that also holds a Petco, Togo's, Big 5, and many other stores, but it used to all be a giant parking lot for the fair. Now parking is routed around to the side and seems a little cramped, but it doesn't cause too much of a problem. Some areas of Cleveland Ave are shut down when the fair is going on so take that into consideration if...

Great food, music, & the Ballet Folklorico dancers. Free admission, too. Music too loud though...you can't visit with people, & even the indoor vendors can't hear what people are ordering (you have to keep repeating/shouting your order & use sign language to be understood). It drives people out of the building. Biola needs to clean up in front of the venue hall, meaning: men are drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, sitting on sidewalk & leaning against the wall, eyeing women passing by & making remarks. We have to pass them to get into the hall. Biola, bring back that family- oriented environment. Make women feel safe. Get the sheriff involved to cite those intoxicated-in-public. If you must serve alcohol, consider a separate, fenced in, out-door beer garden. Turn the music down so folks can socialize instead of getting their food to go.
